What's the best part of raising a family in the South?

Southern hospitality. It's not just a cliche--it's true! Southerners are the friendliest people we've ever met. They smile at strangers, bring cookies over to neighbors "just because," and foster a true sense of community. You don't realize how special that is until you travel to other parts of the country where people don't smile at you on the sidewalk, hold the door for you as you're pushing a stroller into a store, or come running to find you because they found your baby's sock lying on the floor in the garden center. That's not to say people in other parts of the country aren't friendly. It's just that the South has a special way of showing it.

Bethany and Susan were both born and raised in the South, so we have a special affection for the people and traditions that go along with being a Southerner.

And the peaches are nice too.

What's the biggest misconception about living in the South?

The biggest misconception is that everyone is all about football and deer hunting, closely followed by the idea that people with a Southern accent are less educated. In South Carolina we love our college football and we love hunting season, but we've also found the South to be full of art aficionados, book lovers, museum-goers, connoisseurs of fine dining, creative types, and people who value education and who work hard to make the benefits of education available to everyone. Our city is full of up-and-coming entrepreneurs, artists, and educators who are committed to making the world around them a better place.

What do your kids love most about living in the South?

Bethany's family loves the wide variety of museums and arts opportunities available in our city. They spend a lot of time walking through art galleries and museums as well as exploring all the riches of the various local library branches. They also enjoy spending time outdoors. In the South, we have a full nine months of outdoor weather, and even in winter time we have mild days. Snow is enough of a novelty that it brings out the best in kids and adults alike, and it doesn't stick around long enough to get tiresome.

Susan's family enjoys exploring the many state parks and mountains that surround us. We are blessed to live close to some of the most beautiful mountains and nature preserves on the east coast, and the kids love to drive up in the mountains and find a creek to splash in or a trail to explore. The gorgeous Southern climate makes it possible to do these types of things most days of the year. In the winter time, it's not unusual for us to drive up in the mountains and find a place to go snow tubing.
