What's your favorite kid-friendly app?

Most of the social gaming apps I review are not for kids under 13. Recently, I found an exception. The Flying Alphabetinis is a social gaming app that everyone can play. My oldest best described it as Scramble with Friends for kids. Kids and family can play against each other to see who can find the most words. They can also send messages and invite friends to play in a kid-friendly environment.

What tips would you give a mom who wants to become more tech savvy?

Jump in! Our kids are online and they need their mom online. The only way to understand a kids’ digital world is to visit it. That doesn’t mean moms need to be on everything a kid is on. You don’t visit every city when you travel to a new country. Pick one social network, whether it’s Facebook, Twitter or Tumblr, and start exploring. You will see how a network connects people and what people are sharing online. If you have questions, don’t be afraid to ask your kid to help you out. They are often the best tour guide.

What's the most innovative gadget for children you've seen?

My oldest child, who is incredibly lucky, won an iPod Touch. This was her first gadget and she is still playing with it. She uses it for everything -- listening to music, playing games, taking pictures, recording videos and chatting with friends. Other devices she has handed off to her younger sister or brother but this one she refuses to part with.
