In what ways is your home town unique from other places you've lived or traveled?
When I left home at age 18 to attend college, it was the last time I lived in a house located in the suburbs until now. I lived abroad; I lived in large cities; I lived in high-rise apartments, but not this.
It was the very act of moving into a house with a garden in our little suburb, west of Paris, that made me want to start a blog. I finally felt like I had roots. I finally had something to say.
What do your kids love most about living in the European Union?
I think I had better answer the question: "What do I love about my kids living in the EU?" Because my kids don't know anything else. They go to the States on vacation, but this is where their school and friends are. This is the language they are most comfortable in. They couldn't imagine being anywhere else.
But I've had the privilege of experiencing both. And I love that their school lunches are so healthy and varied. I love that there is a good emphasis on history and (later) on philosophy. I love that - even at a young age - they children greet each other with kisses on each cheek (the girls) and shaking hands (the boys).
What outdoor activity do you enjoy doing most with your kids?
I love going with them to the beach. We spend two weeks in Brittany every summer and the ocean is cold, the weather is grey and the rocks and cliffs are breathtaking. But we also visit other places, like near Bordeaux where the waves are a surfer's dream. Our family loves to swim and watch the sunset and have our nostrils filled with the salty breeze.
