What's the best family vacation destination in Canada?

I suppose it would be a cop out to say something hokey like "the best vacation destination is the one where I get time with my family," eh? OK, fine. As an homage to my East Coast roots, I have to say PEI is the best family vacation destination in Canada. Sun, fun and really cool red dirt for building sand castles. What more could you ask for? Blue Mountain in the summertime with its proximity to Wasaga, nice restaurants, kid's programs, on-resort babysitters and comfy, family-friendly condos - all for a super reasonable price - is a pretty close second.

What's your favorite activity to do in the winter with your family?

My favourite thing to do in the winter with my family is travel. Nearly 20 years ago (OMG, I'm old!) I went away with a friend in February and I've had the burning itch to go somewhere warmer than here ever since. Let's face it, downtown Toronto in the dead of winter is vastly unpleasant. The picturesque first snow of the year turns to a brown sludge within minutes and all that's left is wet socks and a longing for sunshine. The Caribbean, the West Coast, Egypt, Europe - I've seen them all in the winter. Some might think having a little person would slow us down. That just means that some don't know me very well. My daughter means more luggage, but not less travel. It's a couple of months until we head out again, so until then I'll sip hot chocolate in my wet socks at the park and look forward to the sunshine with longing.

What's a great indoor activity for kids that doesn't make a huge mess?

LEGO! Well, Duplo blocks right now. We have a giant bin in the living room and while stray pieces can be a serious safety hazard (WOW does it hurt when you step on one!), clean up almost never involves a damp cloth. Watching my daughter learn about gravity and stable construction is nearly as fascinating for me as it is for her!

What's your go-to snack for your kids?

Yogourt is the usual first offer before moving on to berries, apples, oranges, crackers with peanut butter or "mango drink" (lassi with mango nectar). I thought I was Supermom with the healthy snacking kid I had! And then she turned two. Now she seemingly exists on thin air and goldfish.

What's the best age for starting a family?

I really don't think there's a "best" age to start a family. Starting young is easier physically, starting (relatively) old is is easier emotionally. There's no such thing as perfection in the land of being a parent, you just have do it based on what's best for YOUR family.

What should you do if your child is not calling you "mom" or "mommy"?

When my daughter (3) calls us by our first names, I remind her that everyone gets to call us by our names, but only she gets to call us "Mommy and Daddy." It reminds her that she's special, and those are special names for her use only. It seems to work... for a little while. It's because she hears us calling each other by our first names and doesn't want to miss out on the fun. Unless I want to call The Husband "Daddy" all the time (I don't) I assume I'll have to live with occasional corrections.
