How do you encourage your children to help keep the house organized?
We have a chore chart posted inside the kitchen cabinet. Each boy is assigned an after-breakfast, after-lunch, and after-dinner chore according to his age and ability. Even the 2-year-old gets to participate by helping wipe kitchen chairs. I have found that the younger children, who have always participated in this activity, don't complain, because they've never known any other way than to help out.
What advice do you have for moms trying to manage their home more effectively?
Remember your priorities are God, husband, children, and THEN the home. Relax. Breathe. The house may not always be as clean as you'd like it to be, but kiddos grow up so fast, and some day, you'll have plenty of time to enjoy a clean, polished home. Practically speaking, though, to help maintain as much order as possible while they're all growing up, teach them to pitch in. Teamwork goes a LONG way in keeping a family's home clean, especially if the family is as large as ours.
What's the biggest challenge when keeping a home organized?
My personal biggest challenge is probably the fact I have eight boys. They can just be a bit, well, oblivious to mess, sometimes. Other than that, the four biggest jobs that I struggle to keep "done" are floors, dishes, laundry, and sheets. I do at least two loads of laundry every single day, and attempt to do all the clothes for two people. I run at least two dishwasher loads of dishes, one at breakfast, and one at dinner. Floors and sheets get done as needed, and the boys help with both. I have found that periodic "purging" of clothes, toys, and sometimes even dishes, is beneficial in keeping the clutter to a minimum.
