What's one tip you'd give to moms struggling to make time for physical activity?
Physical activity needs to be a daily habit. As a mom, you just have to find the time. Scheduling a trip to the gym, or a morning run is not always going to possible. Have a plan and have a back-up plan. There is no set rules, just find the time, or make the time. Wake up early, take the kids on a walk or run with you, utilize the daycare at your gym. Be flexible, so that you aren't discouraged when your 'plan' didn't work out. There are some awesome workout DVD's on the market that have 10 minute workouts. Fit in 3 of those SOMEWHERE throughout the day. You just have to make time for you.
What's your best advice for moms trying to get healthy?
Make yourself a priority!
Being a mom doesn't mean that you have to wait until the kids are grown for you to make yourself a priority. In order to be at your best for your family, you have to be healthy AND feel good about yourself. You want to raise healthy kids, so what you do and say, is just as important as what you put into their growing bodies. Healthy lifestyles begin in the kitchen.
It isn't necessary to be a chef or a Food Network star in order to provide healthy meals for yourself and your family. Utilize the internet and all of the resources for meal planning and healthy food swaps. If your kids see you eating fruits and vegetables, they will follow suit.
It does take some effort and some planning, but you want the best for your kids, right? So you just have to take the time. Include the kids. Let them help in the kitchen. Have a plan when you go into the grocery store. You have what it takes!
What motivates you to stay active while raising a family?
I want to be a good example for my son. I had a very unhealthy relationship with food in the past and I am no longer that person. I am a single mom and I want to be around for my son as long as possible.
Besides, if his 44 year old mom can go out and run a half marathon...he really is out of excuses! :)
I didn't have my son until I was (almost) 30, so I am older than a lot of the moms. But I don't want to be 'that mom'. Yes, I am the mom running in to school functions in gym clothes and workout hair...
I'd rather be 'that mom' than the one that isn't healthy enough to even get out of the car.
We've all seen it.
I am setting the example for his future. I want him to live his own healthy lifestyle and I want him to choose friends and eventually a girlfriend that shares the same beliefs.
This is where it starts; at home and with you.
