How do you encourage your children to help keep the house organized?
I find that a great way to get kids to help keep things organized is to provide them with their own space to store their toys and belongings. Labeling where everything should go is also helpful, so kids will know where all their toys should go when they are done playing with them. To that end, I have been working on creating a basement playroom space for my kids – that way, their toys can be stored in their own space and will be less likely to end up in our family and living rooms.
What advice do you have for moms trying to manage their home more effectively?
Do a little bit every day -- don't reserve the laundry for one day at the end of the week, or don't try to clean the whole house in one day. If you constantly work to battle clutter and dirt, you will be more likely to succeed. At least, I hope so! Things piled up when my kids were tots, but now that they are older, I am hoping to get things more regimented at home.
What's the biggest challenge when keeping a home organized?
The constant influx of more stuff -- toys, magazine and junk mail -- can make keeping a home organized and tidy difficult. So, I regularly keep a date with the Vietnam War Veterans' charity pickup service to weed out things (toys, clothes, books, etc.) that my family no longer needs.
