What's one of your favorite new books for children?
One of my favorite new books for children is a series I just reviewed. They are called "Fobie and Friends". They are great reads but they also incorporate common phobias that children have. They come with a plush toy that make the children feel even more secure when discussing their phobia. I love the slogan, "Find the fun in facing your fears". Right now, there are three books that tackle the following: facing the fear of dark; heights and swimming in water.
What advice would you give to a mom who thinks her child has too much homework?
I would tell that mom to discuss her concerns with the teacher. I would observe the child first and see if it is "too much" for the child. Sometimes, we think things are too much for children but they really aren't. If the parent finds her child having difficulties or becoming frustrated, this is something I would address with the teacher. It's always important to have open communication with the teacher. It makes things better between the parents and teacher and builds that relationship. It also makes the school year a lot more productive for the teacher, parent and child.
What's one of your favorite educational activities that can be done outside the classroom?
I always think creating your own board games is an educational activity that can be done outside of the classroom. Children can become involved in creating their own board game based on a specific skill or concept that they have learned in school. It serves as great reinforcement for the child. They will learn and have FUN all in one.
