What aspect of being in a blended family has surprised you?
For me, the most surprising part of being in a blended family is how well the children adapted. I really thought we would have had more difficulty. Not to say we haven't had bumps in the road, but I guess I prepared for the worse.
That said, we have no teens. Maybe it will change then.
What's a good tip for preventing sibling rivalry?
I think sibling rivalry is a part of growing up in any family. Other than teaching your children to respect one another and treating them all equally, I don't think you can prevent sibling rivalry.
What's one piece of advice you'd give to moms who are about to become part of a blended family?
Patience, patience, and more patience... and excellent communication. Talk openly with your children, and answer all their questions honestly.
The thing my husband taught me, that I think makes our home run especially smoothly, is that we never say no to having the kids home. We don't get upset if their "other" parents can't take them when they are supposed to, and we let them go with their "other" parents whenever they ask for them. This way they kids never fell like we are fighting over them.
