What's a great destination for a family vacation in Australia?
Australia has some amazing destinations for families, it is difficult to pick one, but I will choose the NSW South Coast, as it is a family favourite. The south coast (around 4 hours from Sydney) is absolutely stunning, a place where the vibrant green countryside meets the transparent blue ocean. Each and every country town you come across is brimming with the best local produce for you to sample, from wine, to meat pies and everything in between. When you aren't perusing the local delights you will be down on the beach, lapping up the sunshine and watching the kids play in the salty blue water. It is a great idea to pack a 4WD and go camping to find your own patch of paradise. Bounce the 4WD along the sandy beaches, or head along a bush track where you’re bound to spot a kangaroo. The south coast is one place where you can experience some of the most beautiful and peaceful spots Australia has to offer.
What's the biggest misconception people have about raising a family in Australia?
Raising a family in Australia isn't all about great white sharks, beer guts, and red dirt. We are actually a civilized bunch, who work hard, and pride ourselves on fine food, intelligent conversation and exceptional coffee. We live our daily lives in some of the most picturesque surroundings on earth and families enjoy the simple things in life, like fresh air, open spaces and beautiful weather. I won’t lie to you, we do sometimes call each other 'mate', have the odd BBQ, and eat copious amounts of vegemite on toast. But if you came to visit, it’s safe to say we wouldn’t be tackling brown snakes, rolling with croc's or tip toeing around funnel web spiders. It's more likely we would be swimming in the crystal clear ocean, driving through the country side sampling the finest wines, or jumping on a ferry and gliding into one of the most beautiful harbours and cities in the world. Australian kids are some of the luckiest and I feel fortunate to be raising my own family here.
Anyway, enough chin wagging, it's time for me to head off. I still have to saddle up the kangaroo so we can get to play group on time.
What outdoor activity do you enjoy doing most with your kids?
My son Harry is 15 months old, and one of his favourite places to play is down by the beach. I love watching him squark at the pelicans, chasing the soldier crabs and splashing in the clear salty water.
