What's your favorite grade to teach, and why?
That is a tough one as I have recently worked with K-6 gifted learners and they are all so fun! If I have to pick, I would say 4th and 5th graders because they are still pretty much into school/their teacher, but they are old enough to get my silly jokes.
How has being a teacher helped you as a parent?
I have learned the fine art of redirection as needed. :) Plus, I am able to put things into perspective. I am less critical of my children because I realize how many others have struggles each and every day that they must deal with at home. Teaching tolerance, respect, and empathy to own kids is a direct result of being a teacher.
What's the number one thing parents can do to help their kids succeed in school?
I truly believe that parents who work with the teacher, along with the child, make a fantastic team! If you are able, volunteer - even in high school! If a child sees a unified front, and not pawns to play, it creates a win-win-win for all parties involved. Being interested and in-the-know about the place where your child spends so much time and effort means a lot to your child and his/her education!
