How do you celebrate New Year's Eve with young children?

Jodie Valenti

We like to have a 'kid-friendly' New Years Eve because almost all of our friends are in that stage of life. It makes it easier for everyone, plus the kids really enjoy themselves. I like to get everyone involved by picking a theme and giving the kids projects (based on age), like cutting out scrapbook paper numbers to stringing lights and banners. They help with everything, including making the decorations, decorating for the party, making foods and even cleanup afterwards. We have both kid (video games, board games, foosball, etc.) and adult (games & conversation) activities and even some that co-mingle like karaoke. I set up a kiddie bar with different non-alcoholic mixes so that they can have some fun and of course an adult bar for adult beverages! There is always an appetizer and dessert bar for everyone to enjoy and we all share a toast at midnight! We also like to share in the '12 Grapes Tradition' which is fun in itself!!! After the ball drops we have all of the children get into their jammies and curl up in the den with a movie (most usually pass out at this point) and the parents can have some uninterrupted adult time!!!

What food would you most like to banish from school cafeterias?

Jodie Valenti

Everything in moderation... Right?! Rather than banish I think we as parents need to teach our children to make healthier choices and encourage schools to have healthier options for our children. Let's face it, our kids are going to be tempted with "junk food choices" their entire lives, in and out of school. Banishing particular foods from schools doesn't prepare them for when they are exposed to those foods through other venues.

What's a great theme you've done for your child's birthday? Please share a link with a photo.

Jodie Valenti

The best theme I've done was an old fashioned carnival. All of the kids had so much fun with the games and the parents even had a blast helping out! This theme can be great for any age or gender and also any season. My son's birthday is in February (usually in Michigan it's cold and snowy that time of year)... so it was an inside carnival. We cleared out our toy room and turned it into a midway with games and prizes and then set various other stations around the house (hot dog bar, tattoo parlor, balloon animals, etc.). I was amazed by how packed my house was since everyone who was invited came. I guess it's true... everyone loves a carnival!

What's one of the worst messes your child has made? Please share a link to a photo if you have one.

Jodie Valenti

My 2 year old artist got his hands on a Sharpie marker and proceeded to draw me a picture all over my hardwood floors! Covering the entire area between our kitchen and dining area (which is all open). I was in such a panic I didn't snap any photos. Thankfully Lysol Kitchen Cleaner got 75% of it up, the rest I had to sand and reapply a protective finish.
