What's a tip for celebrating a holiday or milestone with your kids when your partner isn't able to be there?
Keep the kids busy! When my husband is deployed, I do my best to keep the kids as busy as possible. We get together with friends, usually spending holidays with them, and do as many activities as possible. The busier they are, the less likely they are to be sad about missing a parent. If possible, we skype or wait for a phone call, but I don't get their hopes up and keep it a surprise, just in case it falls through.
What have you learned about parenting from living in different places?
People parent differently in different places. We were so used to how Americans are that when we moved to Japan, we were amazed at what kids were allowed to do. We would see little kids walking down the street by themselves, going to stores, things that aren't common everywhere in America. It worked for them. People thought nothing of it and we got used to to pretty quickly. Just because someone does something different than you, doesn't mean it's wrong.
What are your best tips for traveling with kids?
All kids are different, so it's hard to give tips. With my kids, we completely explain the process, from how many flights, the length of flights, drive time, etc. They are also allowed to buy and pack special toys or books that they aren't allowed to play with until the trip. That way, they have something fun to look forward too. If possible, try to break up the trip. If driving, stop to see or do things. Sure it will take you longer to reach your destination, but everyone will be happier.
