What should every child know by the time he or she starts first grade?

Jodi Shaw

My son is in kindergarten, and he's on his way to learning his letters, numbers, reading, printing his name, respect in the classroom, on the playground, for quiet time, his teachers, parents and so on and so forth. So what should he know by the time he starts grade one? I think he should know himself and his needs. Okay might sound strange, but I am teaching my son who can be shy and sometimes act up and hide due to his special needs, that he has a voice and should use it. His needs and wants can only be met if he has his voice, and communicating with others, his peers will only come if uses his voice (words) to explain things. We talk with our mouths not with our hands is something taught to our son early on, and I want that to continue. I want him to know that his voice is special, unique, powerful and if used correctly to ask questions, share insights, can provide him with long lasting efforts in school.

How do you get a fidgety or unfocused child to sit and do homework?

Jodi Shaw

My son is famous for doing this. I used to battle terribly with him. Then I found things he liked to have around him, how to get him focused. He couldn't concentrate with the tv, but music he liked and it helped calm him down. He needed a room of his own, a desk, pens and things close by otherwise he was always stopping and looking for things. I think you just have to play around see what works for your child. Also it's easy as parents to just say "Go get it done." but I always make my son take breaks every thirty minutes, get up and stretch, have a drink, relax, then get back to it. He's now 12 and getting straight B's in school. We are so proud. Another thing is to get done what he doesn't want to do first, get it out of the way and over with.

What are some creative ways for a couple to incorporate their own children from previous marriages into their wedding day?

Jodi Shaw

When we got married, my husband and I. My son was five years old. We made him the ring bearer of the ceremony. I had a hand crafted pillow with my initial, my hubby's initial and then my son's initial in the middle. Also when we finished our vows and exchanged our rings. My husband got down on one knee and presented a cross necklace to my son which we had chosen together and he made a vow to my son to honor him, be his friend, and to promise to always be there for him. My son also tagged along when we picked out flowers, my dress the whole thing. It was his wedding day too!
