Teaching kindergarten is a joy and a privilege! My family makes life sweet; being called "mom" by my four children is a dream come true. :-)

How long have you been a teacher?

This school year is my fifteenth as a teacher, my eighth in kindergarten. I love teaching five-year-olds!

What are three of your favorite books for children? (Please share what age they are best for.)

I have so many favorites! "Wave", by Suzy Lee, is a gorgeous wordless picture book. "A Day With No Crayons", by Elizabeth Rusch, has a fabulous character and creative illustrations. "Click Clack Moo, Cows That Type", by Doreen Cronin makes everyone laugh! All of these books are appropriate for children ages three to seven.

What can parents do to help when their child doesn't like school?

The teacher is partnering with the parents in the child's education; establish a relationship and communicate. The child may be struggling with an undiagnosed learning difficulty, dealing with social conflict, or experiencing physical issues. As a parent, I try not to react too quickly or emotionally. As a teacher, I hope to share my ideas and concerns with empathy and support.

What's a great gift parents can give teachers?

Chrissy

As an avid book collector, I always appreciate a gift card to Amazon or a local bookstore. I am always adding new books to our classroom library.

What can parents do to get their child ready for Kindergarten?

Chrissy

I believe that a mastery of self-care skills is beneficial for the beginning kindergartner: zips, snaps, buttons, (tying is a bonus!). If children have the ability to follow directions, attend to an activity for a sustained fifteen minutes, and write their names, academic success will follow.
