What's the biggest misconception people have about single parenting?
While the idea that single parent homes produce inferior children (or worse, criminals) and that a single parent home automatically means an unstable family seems to be slowly fading, I think that some people still see my children as coming from a "broken home." I assure you, my home was far more broken when there were two parents under the same roof.
The idea that one parent cannot do as good a job at raising kids as two parents just depends on the situation. Of course, the ideal would be two great, devoted, stable parents, but sometimes ONE good solid parent with heart and soul and determination to make life better is a wiser choice than stumbling along with a completely dysfunctional family unit.
What's the most rewarding thing about being a single parent?
Each time my boys find success, I know I've helped to pave the way. I've provided the opportunities. I've provided the support.
This is great when they're doing well. Less wonderful when they make mistakes.
What's the most important thing being a single parent has taught you?
When I was married and my boys were very young, I had an "ideal" family in my head: two happy parents, sweet perfect little boys, a lovely home and a happily ever after ending.
The reality of parenting alone forced me to focus in on what is truly important. And along the way, I learned that my children are not mini versions of myself and my former husband, but unique and amazing people in their own right.
Once I discovered exactly who my children are, I was able to enjoy the ride, relishing every experience with them, treasuring them for the special young men that they are, and letting imperfection rule the day.
