Do you have any tips for helping kids concentrate on their studies?

What's an educational game or activity you and your kids love?

How do you encourage a love of reading in your kids?

Are your kids hooked on a toy, clothing item, or style trend that makes you crazy? If so, tell us why and share a picture!

Sarah

My boys' current obsession is Skylanders. The game itself isn't so bad, but the fact that they want to spend all their money collecting every last character is annoying. I hate that they are wasting their money on such things!

What items have you repurposed after your child outgrew their use? Please share a link to a picture if you have one.

Sarah

We re-used our cotton receiving blankets by sewing 2 together and stuffing them with plastic bags (like the million you might have laying around from the grocery store). It made a nice bean-bag like pillow for the kids to sit and lay on to read

What's a fun arts & crafts or science activitiy that's perfect to do outside because of the mess? Please include a link to a picture if you have one.

One of my kids' favorites is what I call "ice archeology". I freeze a bunch of their littler toys (like tiny animals) in a block of ice and once frozen solid they use butter knives, hammers, brushes etc. to chisel out all of the hidden items. It's a great activity for those HOT summer days

What are some fun activities to put on a summer "bucket list" for your kids? Please link to a picture if you have one.

Sarah

We love to take advantage of the weather, so a lot of our "bucket list" items have to do with growing- plant a garden, go berry/fruit picking, etc. Plus all sorts of other outdoor activities- fishing, hiking, swimming.

I love to bake and make cakes and cookies for family and friends for special occasions. My boys, especially my 2 oldest, love to create in the kitchen as well. They've been helping as long as they've been able to stand on a bench at the counter and now at 9 and 11 are pretty independent bakers. Even my 2 yr old daughter insists on stirring batters and mixing in eggs. I have many posts about their baking. I'll share just a couple though: http://allboyhomeschool.blogspot.com/2012/03/kids-in-kitchen-weekly-wrap-up.html http://allboyhomeschool.blogspot.com/2011/09/tn-valley-fair-culinary-arts-wrap-up.html

Can you suggest a fun summer activity like berry picking that helps kids learn where food comes from? Please link to a picture we can use if you have one.

Sarah

Grow your own! You don't have to have a large yard- or any yard at all- to grow your own food. Plant tomatoes in pots on the deck, potatoes in buckets or herbs on the windowsill. My kids have always been active participants in our garden, from seed starting, planting, weeding, harvesting and eating. It's a family activity that we all love.

What are your family's favorite activities for keeping cool in the heat (indoor or out)? Please share a link to a picture if you have one!

Sarah

We love to find water- creeks, pools, sprinklers- but I think the favorite activity has to be the fountains downtown. They are similar to the splash pads that have become so popular but less crowed. They have tons of memories of playing in the sprays of water and under the waterfalls
