How do you encourage your children to help keep the house organized?

Like most parents, I think it's safe to say that our system is not perfect! However, we do have toy bins that keep things separated, and we operate on a system of putting the current item away before a second toy is taken out. We've always taught our children to put things in their proper place when finished with them. I think the key is to start early.

What advice do you have for moms trying to manage their home more effectively?

Baby steps. If you look at your entire house, and think about how unorganized or cluttered it is, you'll be overwhelmed. Start with one room, or even one area. Commit to spending small amounts of time organizing, cleaning, and decluttering. For me, those times are before lunch, before hubby gets home from work, and before bedtime so we can wake up to a clean slate. It doesn't have to be a lot, but a small amount, done consistently will make a big difference in overall home management.

What's the biggest challenge when keeping a home organized?

Self-discipline and time management. These are things that I think are vital to home management, and that I sometimes struggle with. Between facebook, twitter, and other great blogs and sites, along with kiddos and real life...well, my time can quickly get crowded. It's important for me to be proactive about how I spend my time. I used to struggle with procrastination, until I learned that I was really handicapping myself with it. I found that if I'm procrastinating, and something huge comes up unexpectedly, it's a big deal. Like I'm-going-to-have-a-nervous-breakdown big deal. But, if I'm effectively managing my time otherwise, if something comes up, it's not such a big deal--because I'm not already working from behind. So, that's a challenge for me, but one that I have learned is really important to try and overcome.

What's your best tip for easing the impact of holiday house guests?

Crystal Brothers

The biggest thing for me is to prepare in advance. Keeping your house tidy as a general rule helps a lot with this. My motto is simply to do what I can. Period. I prepare, get things ready as much as I can in advance and when my guests arrive, that's what they get. If it means that everything isn't perfectly decorated (or even dusted), then I get over it. I have found that guests and their overall experience is determined more by my attitude than the perfection of my house. If I just let go of any imperfections and enjoy my time with them, they will remember that in a more positive way than if they arrive to find me bustling about being stressed over something not being done. So, basically I do what I can to prepare, but then I force myself to forget anything that isn't perfect and just enjoy my guests.
