What's your go-to snack for your kids?

Apples! My son could eat an entire apple tree. Apples are easy to throw into a bag for a snack on the go. On days I have time, I put out a plate with cheese, crackers, and some fruit. The way, both kids can make up their own snack creations.

What's an affordable and fun family activity?

Parks! We spend a lot of time at local parks - from hiking at bigger county parks to small, neighborhood parks with enough room to kick around a soccer ball, play catch, or try out a different playground. It's easy, generally free (some state or county parks have a parking fee), and gets us outdoors, which boosts our moods and burns off wild kid energy.

Last summer we reconnected with the simple fun of a Wiffle Bat and Ball. Pick up wiffle ball games popped up throughout the day, and anyone at any level could join in. Great fun for about $5 a set. (Unfortunately I could only find a link for a bulk purchase.) http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3809219

Darth Vader and Son. For a family of Star Wars fans, this book is fun and adorably drawn. My kids and husband love it. It was a great Father's Day gift last year.

Make an iPod (or iPhone) speaker! We tried this once, and while they don't compare to real speakers, it was fun and super simple.

For car and plane trips, what are some small toys, games, or other fun tiny surprises to bring along or pack in your child's backpack? Please mention the age range for the item and include a link to a picture if you have one.

We always fill their backpacks with new books, a surprise snack or two (especially a lollipop for clogged ears on a flight), and either a new app, music, or Nintendo DS game. The backpack cannot be opened until we're on the road or in the airplane. My kids are 7 and 10. When they were younger, we used Color Wonder pens (no mess), and activity books with mazes and puzzles.

If you've re-entered the workforce after being a SAHM, what's your best tip for other moms who are beginning this process?

Find online support. Real life support is great, too, but not always there when you need it late at night when the kids are asleep. There are so many working moms groups and sites (like WorksForMe in the San Francisco Bay Area) that are a great resources for leads, questions, etc. Ask around in your moms club for great locally-based leads.
