What's your favorite family tradition?
We have a lot of little holiday traditions throughout the year, but one tradition that I have really enjoyed is our summer journaling. Each summer since the kids were little, I had them write/draw (depending on age) in response to various fun questions I'd ask them. Sometimes the topics were about what we had done that day, sometimes it's a thought-provoking question, sometimes it's a "letter to Mommy" about something important to them.
I started doing as a way to practice their writing skills (the former English teacher in me!), but I found that they loved doing it, because it gives them a chance to share something special with me. And I usually write back a response of some kind, so they look forward to reading it. We don't do it during the school year since there's so little time, but I find that their journals have not only helped them get used to getting their thoughts down on paper, but have also become a way to preserve memories of their childhood. They already love looking back at their older journals and reading through their own thoughts from years ago.
What's the most challenging thing about being both a blogger and a mom?
Like many others have probably said- the balance! I have been a mom long before becoming a blogger, so I try my best to keep my family the top priority. Nearly all of my blog material is my day-to-day observations and interactions with my kids, but I try and stay "in the moment" with them rather than mentally composing blog material in my mind.
I love blogging so much, because it's the first creative outlet I've given myself in such a long time. It feels great to be doing something just for ME (though it's all about the family anyway, so that's ironic :). But at the same time, I'm trying to remind myself that the first reason I am home with the kids is to be HOME WITH THE KIDS. So I've been working on staying off my laptop & phone until most of the kids are settled in bed when possible.
What's the most rewarding thing about being a mom?
There are the obvious rewards of smiling faces and cute toddler expressions, but on a more personal level, the most rewarding thing about being a mom is how it has so deeply changed me. After my first daughter was born, I remember having a moment where I woke up with her one morning (too early) and thought, "I'll never get to sleep late for the rest of my life." It was the reality that instead of living just for myself and my husband, I now had a tiny person dependent on me for her health, her well being, her sense of security in the world.
Six kids later, I feel like through the birth of our children, God has blessed me with the ability to be a more selfless, giving person. Not that it's come naturally- it's usually a struggle to put so many people first! But I know in my heart that my life is so much richer as a result of being a mom. I see the people that my children are becoming, and I am humbled that I get to be a part of it all. God's rewarded me with the ability to love so very much, and to give so very much to our family every day. Well, most days. Some days stink. :) But every bit of it is worth it.
