My son was born way too early at just 24-weeks and weighing only 1 lb 12 ounces. I write about how his appearance has changed everything for me, my husband and our almost 7 year old daughter.

In what ways is Northern California unique from other places you've lived or traveled?

I have lived all but 7 years of my life in Northern California. It's hard to put your finger on that one thing that make living here so great. In many ways, it's that inability to name what makes living here so great that makes living here so great.

Northern California has so much going for it. There is the amazing access to everything your heart could desire: culture, museums, BBQ, live music, parks, urban landscapes, beaches, lakes, wine, food, hiking trails, theater, ski resorts, languages, festivals, sports, great and interesting people, etc. I think all of those things wrapped in the pretty package that is the landscape out here are what set Northern California apart from everywhere else.

There is something special about the combination of big city, small town, urban landscape, rural access, beach hang outs and ski slopes

What outdoor activity do you enjoy doing most with your kids?

Every Sunday, we walk on this trail from our house to the neighborhood business district for the farmer's market. The walk is about 1.5 miles each way, and my kids love it. The 2 year old usually rides in his stroller, squealing every time a doggy walks by. My 7 year old uses the hike as an opportunity to go on a nature quest, gathering leaves or snapping pictures of interesting things.

What's a great Northern California destination for a family vacation?

Lake Tahoe! I grew up hanging out at the Lake, both in the summer and the winter and well as the season's in between. I love the small town feel that the North side of the Lake has and come on... you can't beat the setting.
