Writing, gardening, cake and coffee. Life by the seaside with six children, too many animals and two writers in the family.

What's the best part about raising a family in the European Union?

The amazing travel opportunities. Children can be exposed to so many different cultures and thousands of years worth of history just by hopping on a train or a plane. Galleries in Paris, the Acropolis in Greece, the Ronda in Spain - we have it all here. I think travel is the greatest gift you can give your children, and that living here in England we are lucky to be able to visit so many places.

What's a great destination for a family vacation in Europe?

I love the Highlands of Scotland. Huge open spaces, deserted beaches for the children to run around, cosy cottages with log fires and abandoned castles to explore.

What's the biggest misconception people have about raising a family in the European Union?

That the EU provides uniform health care and education across the board. What's available varies even from county to county in the UK, and each EU country is unique, with a different character and culture.
