What political issue are you most passionate about?
The fact that my children are being sold into debt slavery by a government that has grown too big, too intrusive, too controlling, and too much of a threat to their liberties and their future. If we stopped spending today, they’d be stuck with a debt burden of $189,000 each - all of which has already been spent, which will be confiscated from their future earnings, and the benefits of which they will be forced to pay for but never enjoy.
Unfortunately, we’re not stopping. In fact, we're accelerating this madness to the point that a recent study determined that each child born today will inherit $1.5 MILLION of national debt. PER PERSON! How are our kids ever supposed to pay that back? And why should they be punished for our irresponsibility? It's fiscal child abuse!
How do you to teach your children the importance of civic duty?
My kids are still young (6 and under), so right now we're working on taming their inner Socialist - teaching them not to be envious or take things that don't belong to them, to be grateful instead of having a "gimme!" attitude, to work hard, practice self-control and take personal responsibility. Self-governance is the foundation of good citizenship.
I'm a history buff, so I enjoy reading them stories, engaging in activities and going places where history can come alive for them. As they get older I will teach them to appreciate our heritage, to remember that freedom is a precious treasure to be vigilantly guarded, defended, and never taken for granted, and to do their part to preserve it.
What's a political issue you've changed your views on?
I've always leaned conservative but I never used to pay much attention between elections, and never really questioned the reach of our modern federal government or whether it was constitutional. Then a friend on Facebook started challenging me to go back and study the constitution and American history, and reevaluate many of my positions. The more I researched, the more I realized how far government has grown from the original, limited enumerated powers our founders gave it when they designed our Constitutional Republic. I was shocked how many freedoms we had already lost, especially over the last 100 years, and how most Americans didn't even realize it because we've become so accustomed to it. I was even more horrified that I had never been taught anything about it in all my years of school. I felt like my eyes had been opened for the first time to a reality I had never known existed.
The realization of how far we've gone down the road to tyranny - and how what's left of the freedoms we still enjoy may not be there by the time my kids grow up - motivated me to get off the bench, build awareness and start fighting for the restoration of our Republic. There is no greater motivator than my children's future.
As a journalism student, I also learned to recognize media bias (most of the reports I see on the evening news are so slanted I would have gotten an "F" if I'd tried to submit them to my professors). Citizen journalism is the new frontier in holding the ruling class accountable and exposing the side of the story that traditional media gatekeepers prefer to minimize or ignore altogether. I may be a Stay-At-Home-Mom, but I can make a difference even from my living room, thanks to the online revolution! It's turned me from passive observer to active participant in the fight for liberty.
