Unknown Mami is a blog with an often humorous take on life and mami-hood featuring a weekly celebration of San Francisco; it's strong enough for a Mami, but made for everyone.

In what ways is Northern California unique from other places you've lived or traveled?

I was raised in Southern California, but for me NorCal (specifically San Francisco) is where it's at. I live in a place where I can go weeks without having to drive and I love it.

What outdoor activity do you enjoy doing most with your kids?

We love going for long meandering walks with no particular destination in mind.

What's a great Northern California destination for a family vacation?

I love Monterey. Great scenery, great food, great time.

What's your go-to snack for your kids?

Unknown Mami

My 3 year old loves cereal bars, but they can't be crushed or she won't eat them. I pack them in baby wipe travel cases to keep them intact.

Can you recommend a stylish bag that is big enough for all the stuff moms tote around? Please share a link if you can.

Unknown Mami

No! If it exists, I haven't found it yet or I can't afford it. I always end up carrying two bags if I'm with the kids. I did find a way to do a great DIY camera bag though. Check it out!

Do you think the government should pay stay-at-home moms for their work of raising children and managing a household?

Unknown Mami

Yes! Yes! And Yes! Do I think they ever will? Probably not, but a mami can hope. What stay-at-home moms do is vital and important and has financial value. How that value would be quantified and paid by the government...haven't a clue. I'm sure many would be opposed to this just because it would require "more" government, but just as less is sometimes more, more is not always bad.

How much help should parents give their kids with homework?

Unknown Mami

I'm thinkin' parents should act more as a supervisor: making sure that the homework gets done and being available for assistance in case the child has questions, but the homework should be done by the child. It's the whole, "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." In this case it would be more along the lines of, do a child's homework for them one day and you will be doing their homework for a lifetime.

What's an affordable and fun family activity?

Unknown Mami

I'm sorry to say that in these financial times affordable for my family means free. Lucky for us, our local libraries offer all kinds of wonderful free activities. A week rarely goes by when we don't take advantage of a free library activity. We are regulars at Family Storytime and we have also enjoyed wonderful performances by clowns, puppeteers, and Chinese martial arts dancers. Support your libraries, they are a vital force for learning, interaction, and growth in our communities!

What is the best place to raise children: city, suburbs, or a rural town?

Unknown Mami

The best place to raise a child is in a home filled with love. It doesn't matter if that home is in the city, suburbs, or a rural town.

What are your tips for throwing a party that both adults and kids will enjoy?

Unknown Mami

1. Make sure you keep the alcoholic drinks far away from the kiddie table and preferably serve them in something other than sippy cups. 2. Have lots of toilet paper, wipes, and a plunger handy in the bathroom. 3. Realize that some adults behave like children and some children are mature beyond their years. 4. Hire a clown for the adults and a fortune teller for the adults. Wait, reverse that! 5. Have fun and the rest will follow. In all seriousness, I grew up in a large extended family. No one ever made a big deal about gatherings being for both kids and grown-ups, that's just how things were. As kids we made our own fun and it was fine. Now as a grown-up with kids, I'm always surprised by how few gatherings/parties I get invited to are actually family-friendly. It's a shame. Adults should really learn to play well with kids, it's not that hard. Just my opinion.

What's one of the worst messes your child has made? Please share a link to a photo if you have one.

Unknown Mami

Both of my daughters have at one point or another pooped in the bathtub. I will not share a picture because really, no one needs to see that. Babies are cute, but poop is poop and cleaning it out of the bathtub is not fun.

Would you let your child dye his or her hair?

Unknown Mami

As the daughter of a cosmetologist I'm probably far more liberal than most. My mother let me start dying my hair when I was 13 and I turned out alright. It's just hair dye, not a tattoo or anything truly permanent.
