What do you love about being a military mom?

Being a military mom means that we won't ever be in one place for too long. I love that my child's story includes our current stint in England, that he'll learn that the ABC's end with "zed" in preschool. It's my hope that our journey helps us raise children with an appreciation for the rich diversity offered by the world!

What advice would you give to moms on how to build a new support circle after a move?

The single most important thing? Reach out. Get out. Get involved. Go to where you can find people with similar interests, kids of the same age, religious beliefs. Let them know that you’re there and new. Don’t be shy about introducing yourself to people, and don’t feel bad when you never cross paths with some of them. It takes time to build your tribe.

What's a tip for helping kids cope with a parent's absence?

We’ve found that, in the little experience we have with this in my son’s (not quite) two years, video chat (such as Skype) is the best way for both my son and husband to feel connected. That said, my husband hasn’t been away for more than two weeks since our little guy was 11 months old. We’ll see if we develop some new tactics during an upcoming deployment!
