Do you try to give back when you declutter? Please share your family traditions for benefitting others.

Heather

We're part of the freecycling network. http://www.freecycle.org/ Whenever we do our de-cluttering (fall and spring) we list the bigger items on freecycle.org and get them to a good home. Other smaller items, clothes, toys, shoes, tend to go to our local charity shop. Nothing goes to the landfill. When our daughter was younger the rule was "For every toy in, two toys have to be donated elsewhere."

Cabbage Patch Kids, the Bionic Woman, Lite-Brite...what toy from your childhood are you most nostalgic about? Please include a link if you can find one.

It's a battle between Growing Up Skipper and Baby Alive. Growing Up Skipper - remember when Barbie used to have a little sister?? Well this Skipper, when you rotated her arm backwards, how shall we say.... developed. That's right she went from flat-chested to a B cup with one twist of the arm! Then there is the doll that freaked my mother out - Baby Alive. Her mouth actually moved to "eat" food. I can remember putting my pinkie in there - exactly the same way I did with my daughter when we were too afraid of 'nipple confusion' to give her a soother. Baby Alive would "digest" food and you actually got to clean diapers. I can only imagine what sort of bacteria built up in that poor doll's innards.

What's your family's favorite Thanksgiving treat? Please link to your recipe.

Heather

Once you go sweet potato - you never go back! A few years ago I discovered a delectable Sweet Potato Casserole. Savoury and sweet - it's just as good for breakfast the next day. It is on our table every Thanksgiving AND Christmas! I add 1/2 tsp of cinnamon and nutmeg to the first ingredients and it almost doubles as a dessert. I also play around with lessening the fat and sugar content with pretty good results - it's a very forgiving recipe! Make sure that you really drain your sweet potatoes before mashing them. Don't let them sit too long in water after boiling or the liquid quotient for the casserole will be way off!

Have you seen any cute kids' rainboots or umbrellas for sale this fall? Please share a link!

Heather

These boots make me wish that my daughter wasn't 12 and could fit into them! Hatley makes fantastic boots for both girls and boys - often with matching rain coats that make even the parents of older kids ooh and aah!

What was your favorite book as a teen?

Heather

Reading other answers here, I realize that I am SOOOOOO much older than other moms. Judy Blume was where it was at when I was a pre-teen. I read my way through everything she had and when I ran out of YA novels at home Mom threw Gone with the Wind at me. You can imagine my shock when I got to the end. "WHY did you share this with me? This is not a happy ending!!!" After that, Dad threw Douglas Adams's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in my path - WAY more fun and that turned me on Terry Pratchett and the like.
