About Lily Shahar & Her Blog

  • What Inspired Me to Start Blogging

I wanted to document my journey as a new mother, priestess, and grad student. It seemed like an awful lot to juggle at the time, and I was still sorting out how to accomplish it all! In the course of blogging about my son and his development, my studies, and my religious pursuits, I discovered what direction my life was to take: developing a home school curriculum for pagan families that has a multi-religious, multi-cultural focus, and has an emphasis on social justice and the natural world. I wanted to build a child-driven curriculum that takes its lead from unschooling, with a bit of structure in there to explore other peoples of the world and their beliefs and way of life. Funny how blogging helped me work that out!

  • How Faith Inspires How I Raise My Children

My son is being raised as a Witch. He is being raised in my family's religion. He is learning to respect all life, communicate it with it, and make changes to this world for the betterment of its inhabitants. I am thrilled that he is so empathetic, is gifted with non-verbal communication, and communes with and loves animals so much. We make it a point to expose him to the elements (earth, air, fire and water for those unfamiliar), all of nature, and different kinds of people and life regularly. I hope as a result that he will be able to be comfortable in a crowd of people, in the forest with other animals, or alone in the desert — contemplating his existence. In my blog, I have a regular feature called "Lessons for My Son" — I try and boil down some of my bigger "aha!" moments for him to read when he is older. I also document for other parents and pagans how I instruct him on a variety of Witchcraft topics, even at such a young age (he is only 16 months as I write this).
