For us, the best thing has been the travel. From our home in Provence we can drive 3 hours either east or west and be in a different country. How amazing is that?
A very close second would be the food. France is famous for it and so she should be!
Just one? That's really hard. Can I say Francemaltatusconybarcelonaswitzerland? Alright - if it has to be just one, I say Provence. We live here and we love it. Especially the Luberon Valley.
I'm not really aware of any misconceptions regarding raising a family in the EU. Much like raising a family in any country there will be difficult and annoying things and there will be hassle-free and enjoyable things. If you can remain open to new ideas and be somewhat flexible then I think you have a better change of successfully raising a family anywhere in the world.
