Any advice for talking to my 8 yr old (just turned) second grader about the recent start of her menstral cycle? I told her the basics but I'm stunned at what to do next. Are there any childrens books you can recomment to me for her (she's a great reader). What kind of femine hygene products do i have her use? Where can I learn more about irregular cycles? I can't believe my baby girl is already blossomed! I have taken her to the doctor a few months ago because I saw 5 pubic hair and the doctor said it is more common than ever for girls to start young. Any advice at all? Thank you in advance!

My 2nd grader is also shoowing signs of early puberty. I have been so focused on my nine year old that I almost went into shock when my seven year old told me that she had pubic hairs. We are also noticing that her breasts are starting to bud as well. Geesh!!! I found several books that addressed this issue. As a reader replied before, Christian stores have several good books, i.e. the Faith Girlz series is wonderful. I firmly believe in sitting down and reading the books with your daughters as well as discussing and describing things in a manner that they can understand. My daughters are very open with me. They both felt comfortable enough to show me how their bodies were changing. In fact, they were more in control than I was. This is definitely a scary time, but try to make it as memorable and comfortable for your child as possible. I have a girlfriend who had a family party for her daughter. Her father even took her out to dinner. Our daughters need to understand the importance of what is happening to their bodies, but they should not be made to feel ashamed.

My daughters did not start that young, but my oldest started to develop very young. After some research, I learned that hormones in milk, meat and eggs can cause early puberty and menstruation. I switched to organic products for these items, and it seemed to slow down things. She eventually started her period at 11.

I purchased a book from the American Girls site about bodies. I forget the name of it. There are also a few you can find through Christian Book Distributors if you are more comfortable with those. I didn't embarass my girls with "the talk" but I let them read and then had them ask questions as needed. It worked for us!

As for products, I would only use pads personally. Tampons can cause a lot of problems, especially for a young girl. That is just my opinion though, take it for what it is worth :)
