Why are you a Nana?

Why did you choose to be called Nana rather than Grandma, or some other alternative.
For myself, it was because of the example set by my own children's Nana, my Mother in law. Who although she lived on the other side of the world, loved my children soooooo much. She and Grandad visited every year, and spent quality time with the children, the name Nana meant so much to them and to me, that when the time came I too had to be a Nana.

i am called nanny, and so was my mum and her mum before her. my children grew up with a nanny and a gran as i refered to my motherinlaw as i had had a nanny and a granny. when my children where small they decided on their own names to distinguish between grandparents, my mum was nanny in the kitchen [because thats where she always was] my husbands mum was nanny with the gate [because she had one] and that became nanny moo way [because she bought milky ways. my grandchild in Australia cans me nanny and his other grandmother is nanny spain [thats where she lives] maybe its not what you are called that matters only the love you show.

I had a gal pal who's Mom was called Nana , this was the first I'd ever heard it (2003). We always went with Grandma in our family growing up, my husbands family as well. Our girls called my mother- in- law Mamaw, because an older cousin had stared it out of a speech difficulty. But something about Nana, felt so warm and inviting, and some how not too old. Funny thing is that in connecting with some gal pals on the internet in this past year, about 4 of them have gravitated toward the same name. Nana just fits!
