When did your baby double their birth weight?

My son was 6 pounds 14 ounces at birth. He dropped to 5 pounds 12 ounces by 2 weeks. At his 4 month checkup, he was 12 pounds 14 ounces. So he doubled his birth weight by month 4. The doc is still concerned about his weight though because he is only in the 12th percentile for weight. But he is meeting all his milestones and even rolled over for the first time the other day. He did it three times and hasn't done it since.

I'm so glad I found this. My 5 month old is in the same situation and I'm comforted reading your story. She was 8/4 at birth and only 12/8 at 4 months. I bought a scale for home and now at 5.5 months, she is teetering around the 14 lb mark. She also hasn't remained in the same length percentile.

judy, he sounds beautiful! no worries!! every baby is different. by 6 months old, my son had TRIPLED his birth weight. i am not sure when he doubled it but it was early...around the 2-3 month mark.

This actually worries me!! My son is 100% breastfed and at 2 months old already doubled his birth weight!! He was born 8 lbs 5 oz and the last time I weighed him (about 2 months, 1 week) he was over 17 lbs. I don't supplement with anything else. I might every once in awhile give him some sugar water for his hiccups as recommended by his pediatrician. He hasn't seen his pediatrician since his two week visit, unfortunately, because I had to reschedule his 2 month vaccination appointment and they couldn't get me in until the end of this month and by then he'll be almost 3 months. Should I be worried? I am calling the doctor's office tomorrow, though a girl at the WIC clinic I go to told me that her son also doubled his birth weight, but by 1 month. Not sure of his birth weight, though. Please let me know what you guys think.

My son doubled his birthweight exactly at his 4 month appt- he was born at 8 lbs 3 oz and was 16 lbs 6 oz at his 4 month check.

But really, though its hard not to compare your baby with others, but my best advice is don't! It really is true that babies all grow and develop at different rates. As long as she IS gaining weight and is otherwise healthy/happy/hitting other milestones, and her doctor says she's ok then I wouldn't worry one bit. She may just be a petite person, nothing wrong with that!

Well, she's 14lbs 2oz :) Dr is still happy, although she's dropped from the 50th percenile to the 25th. But, since she hasn't really started cereal yet the Dr is ok with it. :) Guess it's time to see if she's take the cereal again!! :)

I know that my son was 17lbs at 4 1/2 months old. He was born weighing in at 7lbs 4oz. He's now 7 months old and just grew out of his 6 month old clothing. Don't worry if your pediatrician isn't worried. =)

Same with my daughter. She's tiny...5th percentile. She doubled her birth weight at one year. But that's okay. Doc wasn't worried. I wouldn't worry about it. Take MIL's worries and suggestions with a grain of salt. Some babies are just small.

Miss G just had her 4month checkup and has doubled her birthweight. She came in at 16lbs 8.5oz and 25 3/4" long. She's a chubby one, too but is very active and I can tell she can't wait til she can get around on her own.

I think around 3 months for my son and 4-6 months for the girls, but I only know approximate 2 month weights...

Girls were born at 5lb 4oz and 4lb 11oz. At 2 months they were both 8lb something oz..

Son was born at 7lb 2oz and was around 13lb at 2 months....

As long as she's continuing to grow and thrive the actual weight/size really isn't that important. :)

She is adorable! Don't worry about it, you just can't compare babies. Your Dr sees dozens and dozens, so he can recognize a healthy growing baby when he sees one. My dr always says, Adults aren't all the same size so why should babies be??

My daughter is 4.5 months and she is 19 lbs 7 oz, she has almost doubled her birth weight all ready. My son on the other hand doubled his weight around 8 months or so. Both were/are breastfed, it's just that they are different body types. I wouldn't worry about it, babies grow on their own schedule!

hi Tara,

as long as she appears content and is putting on weight she should be fine my first was 5lbs 11oz born and took 6 months to double her birth weight but did fine she is just a little girl at 2 1/2 she is in size 1 clothes and is just very petite my seccond doubled bith weight at 4 months and wears the same size shorts at 10 months as her older sister there all different but if the doctor is pleased then so should you be. She looks lovely in her photo

my son was 6.0 even at birth and by 6 months old he was 18 pounds. he actually tripled his birth weight. but he stayed 18 pounds for a few months. He's now 22 pounds at 14 months old. anyway, the point is some babies gain slowly and others gain it faster, but as long as they are GAINING...it's all good!!! No worries!! Your daughter is PERFECT!!
