I am exclusively breastfeeding my 3 1/2 month old baby. I returned to work about 1 month ago so she takes bottles during the day. In the past few days she has started to clench her jaw before pulling off the breast- OUCH!!!! No teeth yet thankfully but how can I break this habit???? Please help I am very sore and want my 3 month old to stop biting while breastfeeding.

I have to confess, this was one of the main factors in me putting my 3rd daughter on formula at this age. She would roll the nipple in her mouth, and bite down from the top to the bottom of the areola - owwww! I tried the recommended solutions, but she didn't get the message (she started doing it at just a couple of weeks old).

There were also lifestyle and health factors involved in the decision to wean (2 other children under 4; no family support around; moving house to another city and the fact that I got mastitis for the first time ever with her, and had had 4-5 courses of antibiotics due to the mastitis and other illnesses in her short life). I had a big chat with my GP & came to the decision that the bottle would be better for all of us at that point.

Quoting Rebekah:

My daughter is 3.5 months old too (born May 30th) and is biting while breastfeeding too... She sure is extra drooly and fussy these days, so I'm thinking it's related to teething (if it's even possible this early).

totally possible, my daughters first tooth appeared at 4 months and they can teeth for a while before cutting them. Aaron is 3 1/2 months too and he is very fussy, drooly and red-cheeked.

Aaron does this too... I tried the stern voice and he just looks at me and smiles >:( I've started not letting him nurse for a good few minutes afterwards and hopefully he will stop but I think its because he's teething... maybe its the same for your little one?

My daughter did that alot, and then stopped. But she now has teeth and decided to try it again....OUCH! Luckily it only lasted for a few days.

My daughter does that too and so did my son. I remove her and sit her in an upright position for about a minute and tell her "Ouch...no bite". Then I let her nurse again. It has helped. She cried at first when I removed her, but it really worked. It worked with my son and now is working with my daughter.

Today has gone much better. breaking the seal to get her off before she bit seemed to do the trick. THanks for all the help

My baby was biting while breastfeeding around 3 months too, but stopped after a while. You kind of get used to it anyway though. Its surprising how much battering a breast can take. Her latest thing (now 9 months) is pinching up a hunk of skin while feeding. hope that passes soon too :-)

I will try a stern voice. I called a lactation consultant today and she suggested the same thing. She also said to have my finger ready to break the seal right before she pulls off to see if I can catch her before she does it with her jaw clenched. We will see how tonight goes. . . .

Hi, I'm not sure if I help or not but can say you are not alone - my 3 1/2 month old is biting while breastfeeding too sometimes. Sometimes she clenches her jaw shut and pulls at the same time. She hasn't done it for awhile now (over a week or so) so I'm hoping shes stopped doing it - the only thing I can think of is last time she did it it really hurt and I got a fright and squelled a bit, then looked at her and said "no, ouch that hurt" in a stern voice. I've got my fingers crossed that she won't do it again.
