from birth he has always taken 5-10 minutes one breast every 2 hours as I would have to wake him. After 2 month check up he has gained almost 5.5 lbs so everyone was not worried about weight gain etc.

Recently past week @ 2 months 2 weeks he has started to sleep through the night and is still sleepy most of the day which he has not gained anything for the past 2 weeks. Feedings are either very frequent or having to offer breast after 3-4 hours. Therefore worried about milk supply.

Also, he only likes to sleep while being held which limits me a lot.

Any advice?

Also have you tried swaddling? It gives the same feeling of being constricted like with holding. I had so many problems the first couple months with my daughter until I learned how to swaddle properly. I thought the tighter the swaddle that she wouldn't be able to breathe. SO not true. They can breathe perfectly while still in the tightest swaddle. She sleeps so well now and all I need to do is put her down in her crib and she's out like a light, no rocking or anything (well we do have a fan going in the room to provide white noise and air circulation...)

My daughter went through this at around the same age. The doctor was worried that she wasn't gaining enough weight, but after about 2-3 weeks she started gaining again. She went from the 95th percentile down the 80th and than back up to the 95th after she started gaining again. Don't worry too much. They go through stages where all their food and energy go into getting longer and not heavier. It'll pass :) If he doesn't start gaining in the next couple weeks I'd start to look into it.

@ 2 months old check up he was 13.5 lbs and born 7 lbs 11 oz. 85 percentile for height and weight. He has hit all the milestones for a 2 month old and is fascinated with cooing and smiling in middle of feeds too. Hoping distractions will not also be a problem in the future.

how big is he? Is he smaller then most his age or heavier? My son did the same exact thing eating one breast for about 3-5 minutes every 2-3 hrs at that age. He gained so much weight tho at around 3 months he didnt gain nothing for 3 weeks cause he was already bigger then a 5 month old. Hes a big boy :) If he is eating and not acting hungry after he is off the breast I would not worry he would let you know if you had low milk supply. Goodluck!

sounds like a very healthy newborn!
My daughter, now 13 months, would sleep on me all day occasionally wake for a feed, she'd absolutely guzzle, 1 breast, 5 - 10 mins, much like your wee boy, and sleep through the night. it did get annoying that i couldnt really put her down, but eventually they break out of it, some days when you ahve the energy just put them in a sling/front pack so you can get on with whatever you need to do. I miss those days, I now have a walker who is into everything!!!!!
Personally I dont like waking a sleeping baby, and never did it. I dont care what anyone tells you, your baby will feed whenever he is hungry, and if he is sleeping through the night, well you are defenitely doing something right!! well done :)

Looks like he prefers sleeping on his side/stomach so the positioner has helped somewhat. I did have an issue with over supply so possible over active let down is still an issue as for the gas.

Poops are still frequent and mostly yellow and very few with a tiny bit of green but sometimes stringy/mucus. But he did have a snotty nose and a vaccination shot recently when this issue first started. Feedings are still one breast 5-8 minutes every 2 hours during the day 3-4 hours at night may be just an efficient nurser ???

Hey I'm glad you like my post - I have been breast feeding my only child and have to take my hat off to anyone who tries - it is really tough if i say so myself. I noticed that someone suggested a pacifier - do not use one until post 3 months when his feeding and wieght are on a steady progression. I sometimes really had to encourage my daughter to feed... making cooing noices and stroking her cheek when she was first born to encourage her to stay on there longer... or just talk to her gently. It worked really well for me. Whatever you do don't let him sleep longer than 4 hours without a feed (some doctors say 6) but to be on the safe side I just take him to the breast ... x

Hi there, that's great he's sleeping through but you're going to have to try and cram in all the feeds during his wake times that he should be having over a 24hour period, which his age is around 8 feeds. Sounds like you need to seea lactation consult and or your paed, he may be sleepy as he's not feeding enough which can happen. You will have to be waking him during the day to get those feeds in. Yes checking his nappies, at least 8 wet ones a day is an indication of enough feed but not always. If he's only happy to sleep while you're holding him is limiting for sure, maybe he has a bit of colic or reflux? I'd be getting a doc and a lactation nurse to check him out.

If your baby will only sleep while being held--Congratulations--he is improving his chances of survival.
If you would like to do things while he sleeps just pop him into a comfy cariier and go about your business.
Enjoy your baby

I know its a real concern and hard to anything whilst holding your little baba!! Best way to deal with it is cherish the moment and make it last!!

You can judge your supply by his diapers.... you can increase your supply through your diet... Alfalfa Sprouts, Asparagus root, and calorific foods avacados, nuts etc etc. Giving you baby skin to skin contact will also increase milk supply. Its quite likely that his eating patterns have changed and as he has gained enough weight doesn't need to feed every two hours.

You could try feeding him in his sleep as some babies feed very well whilst sleeping.

If you think you are producing too much foremilk - you should not express, and take him to the breast more often. This worked for me. I fed my baby almost every 2 hours up - night and day - up until 4 months and she is really healthy.

My baba is 9 months and is only now getting the hang of not sleeping in my arms... I think that part of the parcel with breast feeding! Good luck and enjoy holding your baby!xx

sounds to me like he is getting a lot of foremilk, with his quick one sided feedings, gassy frequent poos etc...are his poos greenish? and a bit sticky? or are they yellow? Have a look on your national breastfeeding organisation (LLI? ABA?) under foremilk/hindmilk. This could be the cause of his sleep issues also.

Not going to lie, but I am glad I am not the only one going through this!!!! My son is two months also and does the exact same thing!!! I've started pumping to keep my milk supply up because I too was worried about it. I agree with what others have said about getting a carrier to tote him around with you so you can get things done! I did this a few times and it works wonders and after he's been a sleep for a bit I always lay him in his bed so I can get things done without him attatched to me!! Good luck with everything!!

My daughter was always a "power nurser". She only takes about 5 minutes on each breast. She has been this way from the beginning. Some womens milk comes in faster so it doesn't take babies as long to nurse. I agree about the diapers being a good gage.
We also had a hard time with her only wanting to sleep while being held. After a while and lots of sleepless nights we discovered that it is because she likes to have her head inclined a little bit (which happens when holding her). We got her a sleep positioner that was slightly inclined and sometimes she would sleep in her swing or bouncy chair. Really anything that she didn't lay flat in. She eventually didn't need it anymore and now sleeps just fine in her crib. Good luck, hope this helps.

I don't know the birth weight of your son, but it sounds as if he grew a lot more than normal the first two months and that he may be ahead of schedule with his weight. If that is true, he may gain vigorously in spurts and go between spurts without much growth. Because of the wet diapers, it sounds like he is getting enough to keep hydrated and maybe if you can find a way to help him sleep better, he will be more alert when he is awake.

A pediatric sleep specialist had written an article explaining how the first 10 minutes of a babies sleep is light and suggested that if he falls asleep in your arms, wait ten minutes before you lay him down. That really helped me, my little one would wake as soon as I laid him down no matter how sound asleep he looked. Even after doing that, I still had problems until my mom took over a couple times and laid him on his stomach. I hear gasps from some moms already, but I know of a couple of woman who have had a baby within the last two weeks, and they are now being told that stomach is best. I don't believe that they really know and that it truly varies from baby to baby. Another option is a baby sling. If you can find a priviatly owned store, they will sometimes let you try the different ones so that you can find one that suits the two of you, then at least you could get a few things done. At the very least, you could fix yourself a snack or get something to drink and be able to use BOTH hands to do it.

Good luck.

Sue, Babies sleep a lot when they're growing. He may be growing without putting on weight. That happens once in awhile, but you certainly should be watchful! My suggestion is to put hot packs on your chest before nursing, which will help increase your milk supply.

My youngest is a very deep sleeper, to the point that he wouldn't wake up when he was hungry. The poor kid sucked his hands to the point of blisters. It was so sad. So I had to set an alarm for me to wake up once in the night to feed him.

lt would be good for you to start a bedtime/nap time routine with him so that you can get some sleep without holding him. Try to keep him awake for feedings. Change his diaper, use cold wipes on his bum, tickle his toes, wiggle his feet and legs, burp him, then try nursing the other side. He should be starting to eat more at this point. Then when you want him to nap, wrap him snuggly in a receiving blanket, dim the lights, offer a pacifier (obviously optional). Other ideas for him to be comfortable without you: warm up the place where he will sleep, such as a hot pack in his bed, then remove it and his bedding will be warm like mommy. Or if he likes to sleep at an angle like when you are sitting up, have him sleep in a bouncer or in his car seat. During these younger months, my babies did a lot of sleeping in the bouncer!

If none of this works, try getting a sling so that he can sleep but leaves you hands free to walk around and get stuff done.

thanks he actually poops every other diaper and the pees are enough soggy but not as they were 2 weeks ago. He only feeds on one breast per feeding and sleeps on me. He is also very gassy and fussy at times too. Taking baby massage starting next week.

In order to get him gaining again you will have to wake more frequently during the day, every 2 hours would be my goal, if he sleeps past 6 hours at night wake him for nursing at the 6 hour mark.

Diapers are a great gauge of the amount baby gets, is he having 5+ soggy wet diapers and poopy diapers 2-3 times a day or as little as once a week.

Other ways to increase weight gain in baby are to sleep with baby, learn baby massage, carry baby in a sling during the day, let baby finish one breast before offering the next, offering the breast frequently, and breast compressions while baby is nursing.
