My son is five months old and out of nowhere has horrible smelly gas. I mean like it puts my husband to shame! Right now, he's on his fourth day of no poop. I know with BF babies this is normal but we have also started him on cereal (mostly to make Daddy happy -_- ) but he has not had it for a week so I don't think that's the problem. Also when we started the cereal he was still going about twice a day. He is extremely gassy and gets fussy mostly at night. He went from waking once (after he's slept for about 8 hrs) to waking 3+. I know it's because of the gas. When I pick him up and cuddle him I feel fart after fart! And did I mention they are raunchy!!!! Earlier this week he went three days then pooped and it smelled pretty bad. Any ideas? This just came out of nowhere. I know this happens but from what I've read it usually starts at 4 weeks and ends at four months...

I was wondering if you had any luck with the gas drops and how long it lasted? My son is almost 5 months and has ben eating cereal once a day for 3-4 weeks. He was fine until about 6 days ago. Now his gas smells horrible, he barely poops and when he does its like peanut butter, and he isnt sleeping well. He's also spitting up more than usual. Is it just something that he'll grow out of?

I didn't use the gas drops. I just did baby massages to help pass things along and that helped. Looking back I think it was just his body getting use to solids. I did stop the cereal and just did baby foods like green beans and sweet potatos but he lost interest and didn't gain it back until about 8 months and by then he wanted table food. I would look up baby massages for stomach issues and give him a couple weeks. If his stomach starts to bloat and feel hard then I would definitely take him in to be seen. Also, if he goes more than three days without pooping and/or it starts to look black which can be blood in the stool. Other than that, just give it time. But like I said I didn't use the drops so no back up there. They could help. Hope this helps. My son is almost 19 months now and it'll get easier :)

Their gastro-colic relfex that makes them poop every time they eat stops at 4 months. Their intestines can absorb so much breast milk that they may not create waste and can go up to 10 days w/o pooping. As long as their stomach and stools are soft they are fine. this however creates more night gas. My daughter is almost 6 months old. Is on Zantac, and is now having this issue. It is exhausting, and I hope that once she starts solids it will help. I am skipping cereal until 7 months since it is so fortified with iron. The baceria in their stomach changes once food is introduced so that might have had something to do with his smell. Give him a couple of more weeks for his intestines to adjust and try some vegetable baby food. Avocado is pretty bland. Hopefully this will help and we will all sleep again!

My five month old poos less now that I've started him on solids. He went off his food for two days and his poo after that was a big one! But now that he's eating his solids again he's back to only a small amout of poo. Also his farts stink really bad aswell!! So I wouldn't worry :)

I agree with Kristina about the gas drops. Also after three minutes of feeding sit your bub up and tap his back until he burps (telling him things like, "come on little man, Mummy needs you to burp, then you can have more milk" and 'Mummy needs to hear a burp, it will make you feel batter") This really settled my little man down and he started sleeping longer at a time. It starts off terribly, with a lot of protesting and crying but after a few weeks I no longer need to time it because my little man sits himself up to burp when he needs to.

Thanks Kristina. He went poop this morning but boy did it smell!!! And to my surprise, there wasn't much of it. I would think after four days there would be a lot. Also, it was thick, ALMOST like peanut butter and more orangey brown than the normal yellow. :/

i would try some infant gas drops they have worked great with my lo and i used gripe water which also works great for the tummy pain. i dont know why they get such smelly gas. my lo is almost 5 months he had the bad gas younger like clear the room gas. maybe something you are eating different is giving the gas for a while i couldnt eat much greens or eggs nothing with onions or garlic. maybe a sudden lactose issue? since i switched to lactaid milk it has been better also(i cant drink reg milk) my lo bm still stink and his farts on occasion. good luck
