hi
My baby has been suffering frm cold frm last week.he had slight fever as well. now his fever has gone. But he's still got cough which i think is productive. what's even more concerning to me is that his voice has totally changed from what it was before.I'm worried that will it actually become normal at all?
Secondly he has totally stopped taking any solids and the breast feed. he used to breast feed at night and was on formula in daytime, but now he gets agitated when i offer him breast.
Thirdly, he suffered frm upset tummy for about a week. just the day before he got cold, he started doing watery stools three or four times a day. it is alright now.
We took him to the health visitor, who said doctors won't give him anything for these problems. she just told us to give him paracetamol.
We've bought over the counter cough syrup which says it is for dry cough. we've given him two doses yet.
His weight has come down slightly as well.
Any advice regarding this will be really appreciated!
thnx

If you own a breast pump, then pump at least a bottles worth. Place the milk in the fridge so it becomes on the cool side. Try to offer it to him while it is cold so it can cool his throat. The cold milk will NOT have any negative side effects as heard of through old wives tales. It will NOT cause your baby to get cramps as this is just a misconception. Giving your baby cold milk is the same thing as offering anything else that is cold. Try to offer him cold yogurt and applesauce. The yogurt will help put probiotics back into his intestines and help repair them. Anything cool that you can think of that will help sooth his throat from all of the coughing. Also use a cold mist humidifier, that will help open him up and help sooth his cough. I would try to hold off on the cough medicine if possible. I hope your little one feels better soon.

Put Vicks Vapor rub on the bottom of babies feet and cover with socks. The cough will stop in about 5 minutes. I do it before bed and it works like a charm. I would also just keep offering your breast. The formula will make him more flemmy (is that a word LOL). Good luck and hope he is feeling better.

I found this herbal based cough and cold medicine which is safe for any and all ages. It is sold at HEB and is made by Hyland's the same company that makes teething tablets, it is called children's cough and cold there is a day and night time formula and it works great

I live in Missouri, USA. Physician has my son Acetaminophen for pain and also mentioned to me (which i am doing now)... to turn on bath or shower REALLY hot in the bathroom until the whole room is filled with thick steam.. and just hold your baby in there ... the steam will help baby to breath better,... lessen the pain in throat and loosen the congestion

Took Cade back to the doctor and he put him on Zythromax it is an antibiotic. He finally is treating it as something other then the common cold because Cade's might have started with a rash which started about 2 days after he received his 6m shots on (December 14th I believe), after the rash he got a slight cough and then a runny nose and then the fever Sunday.
So, Cade's might have been going on since the early/middle of December. Doctors will normally treat symptoms after 7-10 days because then a viral infection is normally ruled out. Also if bubby has had a fever for over a week or you have been giving him Tylenol for over a week then take him in.
Good luck!!

I'm in Wisconsin (the US), I wish I was in England though! Oh, ok Acetaminophen is our Tylenol.
I will definitely let you know what he tells me, but he will most likely tell to give it 10 days as most viral infections (common colds) take about 7-10 days to clear up.
Sounds like you are doing everything right and thanks for discontinuing the cough syrup. :)

thnx for responding Sarh & Becky!
Actually I live in England. May I know ,where r u from? Paracetamol is Acetaminophen, which is used to treat fever. This was prescribed to my baby by his doc. to ease the teething symptoms. this is safe.
As for the cough syrup it contains glycerol in it.Its name is "tixylix".
Thanx for the site referal. As I now know that it may not be safe to give the cough syup, i'm gonna discontinue it. I give him steam by keeping the kettle open in the room to relieve the congeston.
Kindly tell me what ur doc said, when u contact him again.
thnx once again

sounds about how it is for my son. he just turned 9 months. he probably is refusing breast because its agitating and hard to breath when drinking.. that's how it has been for my son.. he gets so frustrated but its so hard for him. he wouldn't take solids for 2 weeks, got diharreah for 2 weeks and a fever for 4 weeks. he lost a few ounces in weight and hasn't gained any for a month now..
took him in yest to a different doctor for a second opinion because mine wouldnt do anything for him.. turns out he had a stomach bug a few weeks ago and now he has an ear infection and cold

hope that helps...

as for voice changing..my son has too..just due to all the coughing

I looked up cough medication and the American Academy of Pediatrics states this... "Cough and cold medicine. The American Academy of Pediatrics strongly recommends that over-the-counter cough and cold medications not be given to infants and children younger than 2 years because of the risk of life-threatening side effects. Also, several studies show that cold and cough products don't work in children younger than 6 years and can have potentially serious side effects."
I thought this one may also help "Antibiotics. Your child's doctor may prescribe an antibiotic to treat a bacterial infection. For viral infections the body needs to fight the virus on its own because antibiotics won't work.".
Here is the link for the website if you would like to see for yourself.

My bubby will be 7 months on the 10th. It is like you are telling my exact story!!! Last Sunday night he had a fever, we have gotten the fever to go away for the most part, but he still is a tad warm every now and then. His cough as well sounds sort of productive and his voice has changed a great deal! To me it sounds like Cade has a sore throat. :(
He has refused all solids and is only breastfeeding, but he also tries to refuse the breast, but he doesn't get a bottle so he finally gives in. His pediatrician said that if I can't get him to nurse I should pump and offer it in a bottle because it take more effort for bubby to nurse then for him to drink from a bottle.
He also has had looser stools, but only about 2-3 a day.
His pediatrician said that it was a viral infection which is just a fancy word for a cold. He told me to alternate Tylenol and Motrin every 3hrs. I can tell when it is about time for the next dose because my bubby gets really crabby. He hasn't been playing really and just cuddling and sleeping. I'm not sure what paracetamol is...?
Cough syrup?!! I have been told not to give my daughter cough syrup until she was 6yrs old! I don't know, it sounds like you are in Australia so I know you guys do things differently there, but I don't see that cough syrup could be safe for an infant. What cough syrup are you giving you him???

I don't really have much advise, I'm calling our pediatrician tomorrow (Monday here) to see what else we can do. What I have been doing is alternating Tylenol and Motrin every 3hrs. I gave him a vapor bath last night (we have a bath soap that is called vapor bath). You can turn the hot shower on, close the door, and sit in the steamy room that will help break up any congestion. If he wont nurse then pump and feed him from a bottle. Other then that, just lots of cuddles the house hold chores can wait. :)
Good luck!
