Amendment to our guidelines

I have decided to amend our community guidelines. Recently there has been a lot of talk about weaning infants onto formula. For this reason I am setting in place:

This group does not encourage or support weaning an infant under 12 months of age for any nonmedical reason.

If anyone would like to know why this is being put into effect I would urge you to read the WHO guidelines (recommends a minimum of 2 years of breastfeeding), the AAP guidelines or any La Leche League information. I would also like to state that this is not up for debate because simply put weaning a child onto formula for nonmedical reasons is not healthy for either the child or mother.

I will also be leaving the group. I feel that all moms should SUPPORT each other. Encouragement and sharing ideas is great and very important and helpful to new moms. Judgement and closed minded forcing your opinions on others is not. Formula is not poison. I was lucky enough to be able to feed my twins exclusively breastmilk, but with my older son there were many reasons I had to supplement. I love them all equally and in no way harmed him at all by giving him formula. With the twins I took it day by day and many times turned to BF forums for support and encouragement. I'm glad that I hadn't noticed this ammendment at that time.

Thanks so much for editing the guidelines. I get all red hot when I read incorrect advice. I usually stick to Kellymom, found it safe there. Now with this implemented maybe I will come around often :)

Thank you Lisa and Chelsea! I love how that Enfamil website says after the mastitis headline: "you MAY not have to wean"!!!! Weaning because you have mastitis is worse! Ugh!

Oh, and Natasha, I HAVE taken a chill pill about formula! If I hadn't, I could type out page after page about their unethical promotion practices and breastfeeding sabotage!!! Again, just more of the general public being misguided by their tactics. The free sample bags in the hospital are just ONE of their insidious practices.

Lisa you crack me up. I think it's insane that people fight for the right to promote formula feeding in a breastfeeding group but to each his own. All we can do it keep giving pro breastfeeding advice and attempting to educate.

Take a look at this page.

http://www.enfamil.com/app/iwp/enfamil/s...

Tell me that's not insidious. Sure, they make it SEEM like they promote breastfeeding- but to a new mother reading this page, breastfeeding would seem pretty scary, not something she would want to undertake. That is the goal. There is not ONE positive here of breastfeeding. Only the problems- And guess what, we have a solution! One of our many formulas, easy peasy, put it in a bottle when you have nipple pain, Leaking (we all know how embarrassing that is) solution? Don't breastfeed in public! Bring a bottle of enfamil!

Formula companies don't want you to breastfeed. It's not in their interest. Just like Philip Morris wants you to continue to cigarrette smoke- and Phillip Morris definitely has tips on quitting on their website. It's marketing.

Quoting Mandy:

Quoting Natasha:

Yes but its there! And has been for years, so not misguiding. Good on the breastfeeders for winning, you made your point. But its no longer misinforming so take a chill pill!

in australia, formula is allowed to advertise on tv, saying that it has to be added to their milk, even as toddlers, otherwise they arent getting the vitamins and minerals they need to be healthy.

but you notice no breastfeeding ads on tv.

good on this site for advertising breastfeeding and all its benifits

Like Natasha said. They are only allowed to advertise Toddler milk drinks!!!

That disclaimer is only on their product because they lost a lawsuit!!! Otherwise, they wouldn't care to put it on there! If it hadn't been for breastfeeding advocates, that wouldn't have made it on their labels.

Thanks Chelsea. :) The pro-breastfeeding stance of this group helped me so very much when I was struggling and needed encouragement to keep going. There are several other message boards around for mums of babies and infants, and a lot of the advice on them does seem to suggest and assume formula-use, so it's nice to have somewhere to come where breast-feeding is the norm.

Formula companies misinformation about breastfeeding? On every can of every brand of formula in the shop it CLEARLY states in large caps "BREASTFEEDING IS BEST FOR BABIES. SEEK MEDICAL ADVICE BEFORE USING THIS PRODUCT" How are they misinforming anyone? Even they clearly state its best. Jessica and Rebecca: agreed!

Quoting Aideen:

I have to say (I'm very talkative tonight) that I agree fully for my own baby...I do intend to feed him til he's two at least....if he'll let me and actually I'll be insisting (I can only imagine at this stage but I fed my daughter til she quit on me at 13 months, and i want to do better this time). I'm not sure that I agree with pushing this commitment on other mums. I think we need to encourage and make extended breastfeeding seem less 'odd' to think of a better word, and yes to encourage others to keep it up, and we all need encouragement through those difficult patches. I agree with avoiding talking about weaning to formula...discussing it more and more frequently makes formula feeding seem more normal beyond a certain age and none of us want to feel like the freaks who are still breastfeeding...we came here to feel normal.

I do think there should be a link or something to another community so people can find out about moving to formula if they choose to and I don't think we are in a position to be judgemental (maybe the tone is unintentional, but I'm feeling judged and I'm still breastfeeding at 8 months now).

Why are we only encouraging feeding to 12 months when WHO recommends 2yrs and beyond? Do we have any position on WHOs reccommendations for complementary feeding?...How do we feel about starting solids before 6 months, surely that shouldn't be discussed? How are we on mixed feeding?

If you are talkative and you would like to join more than one community ( Like me) the Attachment Parenting/Co-Sleeping Moms is a place where you wouldnt feel weird ..there are mothers there still BF 6 year olds !!
