my son is 4 and a half months old and is breastfed. i want to be able to leave him for 3 hours once a week to go to a dance class, but he will not take a bottle. its almost like he does`not know how to take it. he rolls it around in his mouth and any little drips he gets out of it, he spits it out.. he refuses to take anything but skin. no dummy, no teether, just fingers or breast.

I have tried different bottles with different teets, expressed breastmilk, formula and even juice!

other people have tried to feed him so that he doesnt get the smell from me, we've tried feeding him in his bouncer, but NOTHING seems to work.

has anyone else had this problem?

ive started introducing some solids, he seems ok with a spoon if he does it himself, but thats it.

im going crazy because he is within 10 meters of me at all times, wanting to feed every hr and a half -2 hours! lol!

please if anyone has any ideas on how to get him to take a bottle it would be really appreciated!

thanks.. :)

A lactation consultant I worked with told me that sometimes it helps to use a nipple shield for awhile (they are cheap and available at most stores like Target, Meijer, etc). That gets the baby used to that sensation on their lips while still letting them feel close to mommy, etc. It worked great for my daughter. We also did the introduction of bottles with mommy in another room and daddy sitting in a chair that I never use for nursing her. (read that in a book) The combo of the nipple shield for a couple weeks and then trying the bottle that way worked really, really well. I also use the playtex nurser bottles, as they are designed for transitioning breastfed babies. The drop in bags are also nice b/c you don't have to mess w/sterilizing all the time.
Good luck!

My son takes tommee tippee bottles, i find the teat is alot smaller than other makes and he guzzles it all straight down but he is only 7 weeks old so it may be that i tried sooner, also tommee tippee bottles have a little vent so they are anti-colic which is heaven if you ever do get him to take it out of a bottle, i found also that michael took a bottle of expressed milk with me alot better as he could smell my milk which made him want my milk and was gettin my milk not stinky formula just through silicone n not nipple.

I have the exact same problem. He wont take ANYTHING!! Even the medicine thing we use for his grap water. Its really fusterating isnt it. Well my mother suggested that she and my Step dad take him for a while and try to get a bottle into him. I wont be around because he knows I will give in if I am. It may be really fusterating for them but my Mom is willing to try. So maybe this will work for you too.

oh also, breastfed babies a lot of times wont take a bottle from their mother, because they can smell the breast near. Have you tried leaving the room and having the daddy or someone else try the bottle? it just might work. I thought my daughter wouldnt take the bottle, then my boyfriend happened to try and after a few curious mouthing moments, she latched! Also, not trying to pry, but i would postpone the solids, and especially the juice. Pick it back up closer to 5 and a half or 6 months. He might be protesting the progess. "Less boob because of the solids, and now you want me to take a bottle?" But seriously try the leaving the room thing.

Maybe try a small medicine cup or dropper? Know that he will be okay if you leave him for short periods. He can cause fuss all he wants until he decides to take a bottle or sleep until you get back!

go on some outings and don't worry...he will wait to eat and be just fine...i wouldn't push the solids as this can lead to allergies and digestion problems...go to your dance class...out of sight is out of mind for him....if he is really hungry while you are gone he will take the bottle...my guess is he will wait and that is fine!

My daughter never took a bottle...she figured out that silicone is not skin and absolutely refused. I would just mix a bottle's worth of milk...at the time it was 4oz...with rice cereal and feed it to her that way instead if I left her with a sitter or daddy. It worked just fine and the pediatrician was fine with it. So that's an option...

They have the bottles that are made by playtex with the nipples that are just like a natural breast. just look at the different speeds
