So my baby girl has Thrush and is on Nystatin. I have a breast yeast infection that I have been fighting for a while and it has gotten worse. My appointment isn't untill Tuesday when I'll be able to get some meds. Is there anything I can do to relieve myself till then? I was told to try gentian violet but wanted to ask everyone else if it worth trying since its so messy. I'm willing to try anything at this point. Please help!

Acidophilus! If you don't like yogurt, you can buy live culture acidophilus pills. they tell you to eat yogurt when you have a yeast infection and so this is what you should take for thrush, which is what you both have. once it's cleared up keep taking it to reduce you getting another one.

Use the all purpose nipple ointment on this site http://www.drjacknewman.com/ It is awesome stuff and saved the day for me for sure.
Just tell your doctor the site and they can write out the prescription for you.Use washable breast pads[to cut down on excess moisture] and change them often.Try to expose your nipples to sunlight at least 30 minutes a day for a while.Yeast likes it dark and damp.I also used teatree oil in my bath each night then dried my nipples with the hair dryer on cool setting. You can eat yogurt too or take acidophilus pills[available in the drug stores]that will not only help against yeast but the flu too.If you are really sore and having a lot of pain you can use nipple shields for around a week to give you some relief.Just make sure you wash them really well in hot soapy water after each use.For your baby the Nystatin is supposed to be swished around and spit out but since babies can't do this I found applying it to the gums, tongue and cheeks with a silicone toothbrush[ that goes on your finger] worked a lot better. It kept him from having the side effects of nausea and diarrhea too.You can get them at walmart for 2 dollars.I hope this works for you Kristine.Good luck.

Just so you know my child is 4 months old she went through Genitan violet to get rid of hers she had 3 rounds of nystain and it didnt work. For myself what they usually prescribe si something you can not take while breastfeeding so you will have to formula feed or try this, Try the creme you can get by perscription called the magic creme, or use monistate or Lotrime make sure to take it off before breastfeeding though these are anti yeast cremes that I have been told to use. Genitan violet is very messy but well worth the efforts

gentian violet worked for me! along with some antifungal over the counter creams. My lactation advisor gave me flyer with the gentian violet that mixed 3 over the counter creams that I applied after nursing and cleaned off before nursing, continually. the gentian violet STAINS EVERYTHING it comes in contact with. Our son had Bright Purple lips for days and his milk drool was purple as well. But it works. I would use lansinoh cream to avoid staining too much of my nipples and the baby because you put the gentian violet on the nipple right before nursing. I was pleased with the Pain relief and we never got Thrush again!!

I had really bad thrush due to a side effect from antibiotics :( not good.

I was cracked, dry, flaky, sweaty and even bleeding.

I found DAKTARIN GREAT!! It's safe for bubs and it was healing me up nicley.

Also I found compresses helped. Cold for 4 mins, hot for 4 mins the feed and do the same afterwards. It helps open up and release the milk then contract and close it off, stimulating the supply, while your breasts are healing.

Don't be alarmed if you bleed into your milk it's safe for the baby.

All the best,

an antibiotic will not get rid of thrush, thrush is caused by yeast growth. The growth is able to happen when the good bacteria is absent or in reduced amounts on the skin, babys mouth, even the vagina or rectum. The usual cause for this is antibiotic use either when mom is in labour or was perscribed for mastitis. Sometimes the lower bacteria numbers can also be because of hormones changing the pH in the body. Antibiotics kill ALL bacteria good or bad so thats why it is recomended that moms take Acidophilus or another probiotic (eating yogurt or whatever) to replenish the good bacteria back into the gut. That is why babys can sometimes get bad diaper rashes when they have thrush because there is little or no good bacteria in the gut which causes the yeast to thrive as well it can cause diarrhea. Since breastmilk contains "sugars" it is a perfect environment for the yeast to thrive and grow.

Gentian Violet does work well and you only need to use it a short time, it is very messy though. You can however take Grapefruit seed extract as well and use it with the All purpose nipple ointment which seems to work the best. You can also take Acidophilus (an oral probiotic for you). Your Dr may perscribe Diflucan as well, but you may not need it and may respond well to the natural remedies I just mentioned. But if not the prescribed meds are available as well...

There was another thread on here about this where a woman recommended plain yogurt. Gentian Violet wasn't available in her area and she said she'd had great success with it. Otherwise, I've also heard lots of moms rave about the GV. When I dealt with it four years ago the Nystatin worked- after I pointed out to the doctor that we had to treat me too and not just my daughter. Good luck- I still recall the pain...

I would suggest visiting this website http://www.nbci.ca/index.php?option=com_...

If the link does not work, try doing a google search of jack newman breastfeeding clinic. the site has a ton of resources for breastfeeding including dealing with thrush/candida. There is information on all purpose nipple ointment (APNO) just not sure if you need a prescription for it.

I used gentian violet for a short time because it is very messy. remember when treating thrush, you need to be persistent,

Good luck to you and your daughter
