I am tring my best to continue breastfeeding without formula but he only weighs about 10 lbs. All of my friends who had babies around the same time, thier babies weigh a heck of alot more then my baby. He is a happy baby and I think he is eating fine . Should I be worried that he has what everyone says is low weight gain?

My son is now 13 pounds and was 6 pounds 5 ounces when he was born. He is breastfed. He is also at least 25 inches long. As long as he looks healthy, his doctor is happy with his weight, and he doesn't act hungry all the time he should be fine. Definately go by height to weight charts instead of age to weight charts. Height to weight is more accurate since every child is different.

Quoting Tammy:

Jodie the HCP's are ok with it. NOW but I am also on WI and they are still saying that he is on track for his height but not with hiw age group. My problem with that is not all babies are born the same weight so my baby should not be measure by anothr baby that was born birth weight at 8 to 10 lbs. Ian was only 6lbs and 11.9oz at birth so he started out smaller.

I'm not sure what WI is...If you mean something like WIC, I've heard that they sometimes give people a hard time about baby's weights, even though doctors are fine with it.

4 pounds is a great weight gain in 3 months! It is definitely hard when you are comparing. But how can you? My son was an ounce short of 9 lbs at birth and at 3 months, weighs about 14 pounds. The weight gain between the two isn't that much different. As long as your pediatrician is happy, I wouldn't worry. :)

10lbs doesn't seem off to me for a breastfed baby at 3 months.

I would count how many wet diapers he has and not worry about it so much, he's doing fine. My daughter also only weighed 10lbs at 3 months, never compare your baby to others, and also don't take stock in the doctor's charts because those are for formula fed babies and formula fed babies tend to gain more weight (in fat) then breastfed babies because formula cannot be entirely absorbed by the body and the majority of breastmilk is absorbed and used.

all i can say is are your heath visitors happy with his weight if they are and he seems happy then its fine some babies are just slow to gain weight an might have a major growth spurt later on dont worry unless the professionals are worried your doing a great job and are doing the best for him good luck xxxx

my son had a hard time gaining weight at first. i never had the chance to pump, but if i could have i would've. it helps from having to use formula, and helps you out as well. i breastfed my son until he was 17 months, and did use formula when needed until he turned 9-10 months and started using the sippy cup. so my suggestion is try pumping, he may take more that way.
