My 8 week old baby cant seem to stomache his vitamin D drops, everytime iv given him them (iv gone through a whole $17 bottle of it) and he has puked up every bit of it! He will be fine after i give him some for about 5 minutes then starts to dry heave and then pukes and heaves and pukes till his stomache is empty.. im worried about what will happen if my baby isnt getting his D.. has anyone ever encountered something like this and found out what was causing it and what helped it if so i would REALLY appriciate any advice or ideas, and iv also tried giving him smaller amounts 3 times a day and he still pukes up all 3 times so its not the volume of it. He BF's well and hardly ever spits up or encounters tummy troubles so this situation really confuses me.

I'm in Australia and I've never even heard of giving a baby a vitamin D supplement. It seems silly to me to be giving a baby something like that. I'm very fair (natural redhead) and hardly go into the sun (except to hang out some washing, get the mail, etc). I BF both my kids and they are fine.

My pediatrician always said kids get enough vitamins from their food most of the time. its better for his stomache to at least be full if hes puking all his food up then the vitamin is not doing anything for him!

I took my bubby off them because they caused him to become constipated. He is now 8ms old and mainly breastfed and is healthy and doing great w/o them! Take him off of them, I'd rather not give them to him then force them on him and cause him to throw up his entire stomach content.

Rachael that is not true at all. If a mother is deficient in Vitamin D then so will her breast milk but if she is not deficient then neither will her milk and neither will her baby. BUT, a LOT of mom's are in fact deficient so it appears that breast milk isn't good enough which is just not true. If the mother adequately supplements her vitamin D then her milk will be just fine. There is absolutely no need to be giving children these drops as long as the mother is taking a vit. D supplement (but you can get tested first just to be sure that you are in fact deficient) and the baby is getting some sun exposure,

you really don't need to give those instead try to make sure your child get sun light exposure and you eat enough vitamin d that will be passed to the baby in your breast milk.

If you are worried about your daughter's Vit-D levels your best bet is to supplement yourself. As long as your levels are good then she'll be getting all she needs from you. Those drops are hard on her little system and as others have mentioned are mostly a marketing ploy by the companies that make them. Doctors are doing a disservice to these women and babies by encouraging the mother to make sure her levels are good instead of pushing them to buy an unnecessary product mostly produced by formula companies.

you could also try and give him Tri-vi-sol it has vitamin D in it, maybe its the flavor that they have added to that brand that isnt agreeing with his tummy.
My daughter didnt like the vitamin D but she didnt hate the tri-vi-sol drops. You can get them at your pharmacist just ask for them and they should have them behind the counter.
Goodluck! =P

Don't stress about this at all!!!!! I BF my twins too and doctor prescribed vit D, probably first two months they hardly have any because they just threw up what they ate and made them upset. When they got little bigger, I think around 3 months, they started to love because it's sweet, i think it was "Tri-vitamin" but anyway I talked about this with my friend who is studying to be midwife and she said it's absolutely unnecessary to give it to them, just another thing they come up with and she told me she recently heard discussion on public radio that BF babies really don't need extra D. Really it's more important that he enjoys his milk without some stupid drops :))))

AH The money making of baby raising. It is true that babies need vitamin D to avoid rickets and other conditions associated with vitamin D deficiency. Hospitals and physicians in the US will be likely to recommend the enfamil or other brand name drops even though they have all sorts of additives in them. It is a marketing ploy the same way they recommend enfamil and similac baby formula over breast milk. The balancing act of sun exposure and vitamin D is a tricky one. So before you commit to making sure baby gets his/her vitamin D that way I would recommend having your own D levels checked. If yours are adequate than chances are your little one will get all the D he/she needs naturally. Most adults in the US however, have a vitamin D deficiency, even those that live in warmer climates. If yours are low you should give baby a supplement, but an all natural vitamin D only drop would be my first choice. Good luck

Preemies need vitamin D drops even more---baby makes a six-month store of them the last two months in utero, so a preemie doesn't have that store of the vitamin. Wish I'd known about the single-drop kind; our hospital acted like the Enfamil 1/2 ml version was all there was.

Vit D is mostly produced by the skin with sun exposure....10-15 minutes of sun exposure a day will provide plenty of vitamin D. My suggestion....take a nice long walk. If you need to bundle up, longer times and if it is nice and warm just a few blocks and back will suffice. (remember that sunscreen and sunblock though helpful also slow/stop the skins ability to produce vit D) It's all about balance

You should try "D Drops"
http://www.ddrops.ca/
If you can get them where you live. I had the same problem with my little girl when she was a baby the full mL of the other stuff I was giving her always made her puke and once she even like choked on it. With the dDrops you only need to give literally 1 drop. So you just drop it on your boob once a day and feed the baby as usual. They get exactly the amount they need. They are AWESOME! Totally solved the puking problem for me. Good luck!!

Here's some info about vitamin D. When I say sunlight I don't mean I'm laying out on the beach with my kid. When we go places she's exposed to the sun. Baby needs 2 hours/week fully clothed to get the vitamin D they need. If you live up North (like in Canada) you won't get the sunlight you need.

Same here Tyrae! (I'm in BC too) My doctor said the same thing. They also say that a baby younger than 6 months should not be exposed to direct sunlight, so it's important that they get their vitamin D from supplements.

Formula fed babies need half the dose of vit-D than breastfed babies. It helps their little bodies absorb calcium and because they aren't supposed to get a lot of direct sunlight it is very important. I was told by the nurses at the hospital, my pediatrician and our family doctor to give my daughter vit-D drops.

I live in British Columbia, Canada.

My pediatrician recommended I give my daughter vitamin d drops too, we bought them but never bothered giving them to her. I would stop for awhile and wait till your LO is a little older, or speak to your dr on the next visit, just be sure your still taking a vitamin supplement.

My pediatrician never suggested vitamins either. Where do you live? I live in Texas so my daughter gets plenty of sun exposure. If your pediatrician really wants you to give them then I would ask them for another brand or different option since baby isn't keeping these down.

Hey Meagan,

Tyrae is right. I was giving my daughter the vitamin D drops from Enfamil up until 2 months ago, when I realized they had a bunch of crap in them like "caramel" for flavour and colour. My pharmacist recommended another kind, which is literally a small drop of vitamin D, containing the regular 400IUs without the other stuff. You can either put a drop on your breast before nursing, or soother, and make sure he sucks for at least 30 seconds. I doubt he would even notice it! It's a tiny drop that has absolutely no taste. The brand I use is called Baby D Drops, although that's up here in Canada - not sure where you're at. Ask your pharmacist if they have anything like this.

Good luck!!

You might need to try a different brand of it. Some brands have extra additives that don't go over well with baby.
