baby dad wanting me to stop nursing

My baby daddy and his parents want me to stop breastfeeding! My son is only 7 months and he relies so much on nursing. He wont take anything else. They have taken it to the extreme, going to the doctors office and demanding reasons why my son cant take formula. The judge told them last monday in court, mothers choice! How do I get them to respect my wishes? They are Jehovahs Witness and they are using that as reason why they want me to stop.

wait? Jehovahs witnesses want you to stop doing the most natural thing in the world? (Besides being born and dying I mean) how in the world does that make sense? it's like the biggest oximoron I've heard all day. and besides formula is fricken disgusting. you don't have to stop doing anything. avoid them as much as possible

Sounds to me like they were the ones that messed up. Your baby should not have to suffer because of their poor choices. You are doing the right thing.

The father and I were never together. They want me to stop nursing so they can have visits at their house since they are not allowed back in my house after they recorded me without me knowing.

Why does he want you to stop? How old is the baby? You should be able to nurse for as long as you want. I nursed until my baby was 20 months old.

Keeping a baby from a bottle is torture? That's a new one. Hang in there! You're doing great!!

I havent heard from the father in a week. He says keeping a bottle from a baby is tourture. Excuse me! Most breastfed babies dont know what a bottle is. My son had nipple confusion because he was given a bottle after he was born cause i had complications. I wasnt happy and the lactation consultant was NO help. She told me Cooper was going to be hyper active cause he was latching on. I have came a long way with the breastfeeding and I am not stopping for awhile. I thought he was not going to be nursing kind and that upset me. Now, he cant get enough.

I agree! You are doing what is best for your child!! Don't let no one stand in your way of providing that for your child! NO religion is against breastfeeding that I know of! NONE!!! Its a scam they are using.....DO not pay attention to nothing no one says...You know your childs needs...NO one else!!!
I'm horrified that people would take a loving mother to court over such a tedious matter!!! A Judge will ALWAYS do what is in the best INTEREST of the CHILD!!!! NO one else!!!!

Breast feeding is natural, "the way God intended it". I can't imagine a religion that would force artificial over natural. I think they are incorrectly using religion as their excuse.

i don't know what kind of religion would force you to give your child artificial nutrition! essentially that is what formula is and what bottles are. you're giving your son the best! you're going to just have to ignore them for now. also you said "baby daddy"....so you're not married to this guy right? if you aren't legally attached...i would consider whether this is the right guy for you. you want someone who respects you and your decisons....especially decisons that regard your child.

i dont understand why other people think it is there buisness to tell you whne to stop!! i would keep doing what you are doing until you or your baby are ready to stop... if you werent suposed to breastfeed you would have been a man!

I feel sorry for you that you need to go through this..just keep breastfeeding, you are providing the best for your baby and dont let them stop you and stress you...be proud of it, you are giving your baby the best start to his life...if they want more visitations, they r just egoists, they should be concerned for the baby, not thinkin just bout themselves... this show the judge who really cares for the baby...

Thank you so much everyone! These people are crazy! They are about to get a temp restraining order. They are just mad that I am breastfeeding so thats keeping them access to my son but you would think they would be happy he is getting the best.. I guess you cant please everyone.

We had Witness' come to our door today so I asked them. They did seem a little taken aback by the question they said that bf was absolutely fine and is the accepted form of feeding babies. Stick to your guns and do whats best for you and your baby

I take it you are not a Witness? I can't imagine why they would be complaining if you were. My 2c (for what it's worth) would be to contact a JW church leader and ask them for the official stance on breastfeeding. I've just been googling it and can find nothing against it. I have found several discussions about feeding and feeding in public on JW discussion boards - which implies it's an accepted part of the JW culture.
Contact a church leader or liaison. They will likely say that breastfeeding is fine (and in my opinion I would think it was preferred from a biblical point of view), and you can then use that against the family.
Maybe they'll back off if you can express milk so they can bottle feed your son? It may be more trouble than it's worth though if he won't take a bottle and you don't want them giving him formula behind your back. I hope they sort themselves out because this is just a silly thing to expect you to do!

Tell them to shove it! Yeah, I know that's not very helpful. Sorry. The court is on your side, so that's a good start. Can you (or did you) get it written into the court order, so that if they keep mentioning it they are in violation of the order?

I don't know what else to say other than you are doing GREAT! I'm still nursing my 2 year old son (hoping to let him self wean... we'll see) and I'm just waiting for the day when his father uses the court to try and get me to stop. Not sure of the court's view on child led weaning, but I do have full legal custody. I think that should cover me.

Hang in there! :)

I'm so sorry you have such wacko's in your life. Do some research into their faith as to why it mandates you stop. It's probably crap they are making up just to increase visitation.

It is your choice and you've got a judge backing you. Good luck, we support you.

I am horrified by your story!
I am so glad that my family is so supportive.
A religious reason to stop breastfeeding is bogus!!
I would just advise as Cat advised, have some well documented scientific based evidence about the positives of breastfeeding to recite to them each time they try to talk about it.
If they try to talk about positives of formula and negatives of breastmilk, then try to find the opposing side for each statement, and find the negatives of formula and the positives of breastmilk, which you probably have tried to do.
But there are so few negatives about breastfeeding that they really dont have a leg to stand on!!

Like Cat said, our breasts are made to feed our babies.
Like every other animal in the kingdom that feeds their babies their own milk!!
It doesn't make us liken ourselves to cave people to still feed our babies our own breastmilk.
Breastfeeding is Normal!!
Formula is only man made and just doesn't come close to being a comparable feeding method, in my opinion.

My one piece I suggest which might help them to see why formula is not normal....
Do we make orphaned calfs (baby cows) feed on formula made from human milk??
No, they actually get a surrogate mother cow to feed on her cow milk.

I wish you the best of luck, Kendra!!
You are brave to post your question!!
I am so glad the court was sensible in it's decision and ruled it's the 'mother's choice'!
You have solid ground to stand on there, with heaps of scientific evidence as to why Breast is Best!!

You are doing the right thing. You could try researching and printing out the benefits of breast feeding and showing it to them or reading facts to them every time they say something. Your best bet may just be to ignore them or just use the same response every time, if they know what you'll say maybe they just won't want to hear you anymore. I personally would say something to the effect of the court decided you were wrong or the judgement was on my side. Breast feeding is your choice, it is the oldest form of feeding babies, its why we have breasts! Babies and children who are breast fed are generally healthier, have better immune systems, and tend to not be over weight. I'm sure that their are many many other positives. Your baby will let you know when they are done breast feeding, no one else has the right to halt that bond! This is well worth the fight! I wish you luck and strength! Stand by your (and the court's) decision! It will not be easy but it is worth it for your child's health and your bonding at the very least! Maybe even research the whole Jehovah's Witness thing and see if they're pulling it out of their butts! Good luck!! Hang in there!! xoxo
