ok, so my son is 8 months old and eats very well, he's still breast fed and has 2 to 3 solid meals a day, I used to buy heinz baby food jars all the time and have now decided to make my own baby food, using potata, pumpkin, mixed veges, cauli flower and breast milk mashed up.. he loves it and has it every day at lunch time and sometimes of a night.. but is it ok to feed him this?? is it healthy or too fattening??? I also give him a tub of childrens yoghurts for breakfast and he loves them.. but they contain cows milk... is it ok to feed him these things? or should I go back to jar food? hmmm.. trying to do the right thing...

yogurt and cheese is fine before 12 months, cows milk isn't recommended as a substitute for breastmilk or formula before then. Check out this website for TONS of info on making your own baby foods and what to feed when.

DONT GO BACK TO JAR FOOD!!! making your own baby food is the healthiest thing you can do. fresh veggies and fruits... pureed or fork mashed. it's so much better than the jars. my twins also have the yogurt for lunch everyday. i too was concerned about the cows milk so i spoke with my pediatrician. he told me that the yogurt is ok since it is a small amount of cow's milk. and the milk doesn't replace your breastmilk. yogurt is actually very good for them. just don't give him straight milk yet. good for you for making your own food. it's better for baby AND cheaper for you!! good luck!

Also, I have heard that there are a few veggies naturally high in nitrates which should not be given too young. These include beets, carrots, green beans, spinach, and collard greens. Meats are hot dogs, cured ham, bacon, bologna, and salami. It is reccommended to buy commercial versions of those veggies because their nitrate levels will be screened so as to be within safe limits or just wait until baby is older to feed them.

I found a great book at target.com called the "So Easy Baby Food Kit." I am making my own baby food for my 6 month old, he gets veggies and fruits once or twice a day now and loves them. I found the book incredibly helpful for choosing what foods to give at what ages and preparing the foods properly. I live in a rural area, so the farmer's market is a great place for fresh produce, or using frozen fruits and veggies is good also. As far as exact nutrition guidelines, I only know what I have read, and I feel this book to be very helpful. You need to read, and ask, then do what you feel is best for your babe. Good luck and keep up the good work.

I think it is o.k. Do you think that cow milk products may be dangerous for him? ;-)

Well done with making your own foods I am also trying to do it with my first I was so busy and he mostly got jar food but now with my 6 month old I am trying to make my own, I have just read to not add any butter, suger or salt. otherwise I dont really have any advice as it sounds like you are doing the correct things I also gave him kiddies yoghurt but he didnt like it so going to try again in a while.. good luck.

That is perfectly fine. I still feed my 10 month old daughter some jar foods but mostly finger foods she likes to feed herself. I also have given her yogurts and small bits of cheeses. My doctor said stuff like that is okay to give the babies before a yr even though it does contain some milk.

You can give him goats milk yogurt... Almost as good as breastmilk.

But no, that sounds fine to me.

EDIT; Also, I never fed my son purreed from jars OR homemade. at 8 months he fed himself finger foods.
