My lo never had baby food. Her first food was avocado cut up into bite-size pieces. Then we did peas, shredded chicken, bananas, etc. She has been sharing our food since she started eating. We started solids at 6 months, but she wasn't really into them until about 8.5 months.
For us, babyled weaning has been great.

Um, I think that whoever posted this had some of their facts confused. However, there is a method of introducing solids where you give the baby a whole piece of soft food, ei. a quarter of an avocado or a strip of banana, and they learn to eat themselves. They aren't given purees. All babies are different as far as when they are ready for solids too. Some babies start at 6 months, some aren't interested until they're close to 18 months. As long as they're nursing, they're getting everything they need. Child lead weaning is just the child deciding when they are done nursing.

both my kids waited until well past 6 months before they were ready for solids. But, we feel that the packaged baby food stuff is a waste, and so we wait until they are ready to eat some soft 'real' food. ds2 couldn't have cared less about food until about 9 months. we had tried some before that, but he showed no interest, so we didn't force it. now he's eating many fruits whenever we think to give it to him! Definitely a fan of letting baby take the lead and just eating what we do :)

Not all babies will be ready at 6 months. Some will and some won't. When you do baby led weaning you want to make sure that baby shows all of the signs of readiness which include:
-at least 6 months
-sitting up unsupported
-lost tongue thrust reflex
-able to pick up food between thumb and finger
My daughter wasn't ready until almost 8 months. I love baby led weaning. I knew she was really ready then. We didn't have to mess with buying baby food. She just ate steamed fruits and veggies. She loves avocados and has been eating them since she started solids. They are a great first food.
