My 5 month old son would finish a feed and then if I just sit him on my lap he would swing back and pull on my shirt. Every time he's with someone else he doesn't seem to 'search for food' and then when I hold him he just keeps shuffling down or swinging his head back and tilting it towards my chest. Is this a reflex or is it hunger?

Breastfeeding is not just about nutrition. Non-nutritive suckling is excellent for maintaining a good milk supply, for comfort and security on your son's part, and to help maintain the effectiveness of the immune response in the breast.

my 7 month old is doing something similar, leaning into my chest with her mouth open and her head swing from side to side.
it's usually after an hour or two since she woke up and had her feed. I offer the boob but she doesn't want it.
So I dont know what it is either.

My son is 5 months, eats a lot of solids plus milk feeds and does it too, normally he wants to suckle to sooth him to sleep, sometimes it feels like he is on the boob 20 hours a day.

He knows you are his mommy and food supply. I always just fed them when they did this. You won't over feed them. I think it's a boy thing. My daughter wasn't as bad about this. I think he just wants to suckle.
