My BF baby is 4 1/2 mo old has been going a couple of days w/out pooping. She is gaining weight well, but sometimes she goes a few days without pooping. Does anyone else's babies do this?

My daughter was the same. This is normal for BF babies. She would go once every two or three days. Since I have her on I little bit of solids now - she usually goes once a day or maybe once every other day. As long as their weight gain is good and your getting plenty of wet diapers - don't worry.

Quoting rebekah:

my little one got very constipated when i started solids at 4 1/2 mos. (rice cereal). he was in pain, crying, straining, and passed hard dry clumps. he went from every other day to 4 days without. we couldn't get him back regular. we tried karo syrup, juice, water, prunes, and finally lactulose. all recommendations from his ped. we were having to give suppositories, which worked but you are only supposed to use them once in a great while or they become dependent on them. i finally stopped with everything except bm and some juice mixed with water. he went 9 days and finally destroyed 2 diapers in a row. he wasn't in pain and it wasn't constipated poo. what i am trying to say in all this is you will definitely know if she is constipated. if she isn't straining and still seems comfortable then she is ok. ask you doc if you feel uncomfortable though. they will lead you in the right direction.

This is just another reason not to start solids before an infant is 6 months of age.

It's normal, this happened when my baby was only a few weeks old. Although it is normal they can feel uncomfortable - my baby ate less because she felt full and uncomfortable so put too little weight on. So, a brilliant trick i learned is baby massage for a healthy tummy. Its really simple, use olive oil, and always massage the stomage in a CLOCKWISE direction - there are other moves too, but it only takes a few minutes and should be done at nappy time. Now, when i know she wants to do a poo and is a bit squirmy i do it a few times and it really works. Honestly, the first time i did it she went 7 days without a poo - after just 1 massage she did one within 2 hours. it definately works! I'm sure your health visitor can show you how to do this because i believe the benefits of this technique can be used even in older children so its a good trick to learn.

my daughter did that same thing at that age. They say that breast fed babies can go 6-10 days without pooing but if you get worried try to massage your bubs belly. Use 2 fingers and go in a clockwise dirrection in a half circle on bubs tummy. I have done this afew times when mine starts to get cranky and she always poo's soon after.

Like everyone else said it is completely normal for exclusively breastfed babies to go a few days without a bowel movement.

That's exactly what my son did. I think it seems so weird b/c at first they're going all the time. Mine is 11 months old now and if I remember correctly, 3 or 4 months old was when he started going a few days in between. It wasn't until he started on solids that he goes once a day or once every 2.

My daughter who is 3 months old goes every 4 days. Babies that are exclusively breastfed can poop once every 7-10 days. It is a very normal thing. If she goes past the 10 day mark I would call her doctor to make sure everything is working properly in her digestive system. Here is a link that shows about dirty diapers and breastfed babies.http://www.mother-2-mother.com/normal.ht...
