Hello, I have a 10month old little girl and we have BF ever since day 1 without any problems at all. She has been eating table food for a few months now and drinking water/juice/breastmilk from sippy cup at daycare. I nurse her at home at night and weekends. I have recently gotten really sore nipples, just on the tip, I mean really sore!! I planned to BF until she turned 1 year, but it feels like my nipples are going to fall off when she nurses or I pump. She doesnt have any teeth yet, but is teething. Anyone else had this happen to them and what did you do or does anyone know what is going on? I have even considered stopping BF early due to this pain, but do I go ahead and give her cows milk (even though she isnt a year old yet) and how often does she need it??

I have an 8 month old and we sometimes have the same problem, usually due to both of us getting lazy and me just popping the nipple in her mouth, (after 8 mos. she should know how to latch right) no- she gets lazy and slides down the nipple, so i pay special attention to our latch for a few days and it gets better. hope this helps it has happened to us several times.

I would wait it out a few days, and see how it goes.. I had thrush at 3 wks postpartum, and it started out with my nipples getting really sore, like you're describing, I tried pumping and had the same issue, with latch issues I didn't have the same pain. If it turns into a burning or a stabbing sensation, then its very likely thrush.. which can happen obviously for a large number of reasons. =) Check with your doctor though if it continues! =) Hope it gets better soon!

My daughter is 14 1/2 months and we still breastfeed (well untill today :( she didnt nurse at all today, very sad at our house today)

My nipples were very sore when we had a tiny bit of thrush, but it was more of a needle poking/razor stabbing pain. She also went thru a stage where her latch was messed up with her teething (lucky us got teeth at 3 1/2 months) she now has 11 teeth :) With thrush you can get meds from the clinic/ DR office. the other I would pull her off and have her latch on again, sometimes when she was done I would put a warm rag on my nipple for a bit, cause the bad latch felt like a burning feeling (and my nipple would turn white for a while. (really hurt bad)

Every Dr says something different, you could just pump for the rest of the time, my DR said I could give her cows milk a little every day, from about 10 1/2 months on.. Instead of starting her on formula, if she wasnt nursing enough.. but I would talk to your DR about it, just to make sure your on the same page.
I think they say that you only need 4 formula bottles (6-8 oz from 9 months to a year)

I don't want to freak you out, but is there a possibility that you could be pregnant? Has your period returned? I got really sore nipples a few months ago. It felt like how they felt when I was first pregnant. It turned out that I wasn't pregnant and the next week my period returned. I've gotten the sore nipples the week before every period since then. I did find some info that said you can do a calcium/magnesium supplement to help with the sore nipples. Check with your doctor first, but here's the info. It's at the bottom of this article:

If it's neither of those things then go back to basics: Is your latch ok? Do you have thrush?
