I have been extremely fortunate to never have any supply problems. In fact, up until now I have a huge supply -- I even looked into donating milk. This is my 3rd baby.



I had tried an IUD but had minor complications and had it removed. The gyn talked me into trying the NuvaRing. she said since my supply was so well established (my baby is 5 months old) and it is such low dose hormones it should be fine. Well, that was Thursday last week. I have noticed less milk supply. My breasts are definitely not as full as they usually are.

My baby seems to have enough milk. I'm just not hard and leaking like I'm used to.

I just want to be sure it doesn't continue to dry up.



Does anyone have any experience or suggestions?

I think this demonstrates how essential it is that we do our own research and make sure our doctors are working with us and our goals for breastfeeding. So glad you figured it out in time for your supply to not be too affected. FYI: On progesterone/progestin only birth control, there is a significantly greater incidence of breakthrough bleeding that occurs at ovulation. Good luck.

Since I took it out last night I have already noticed a big difference in my supply returning. Phew!

It makes me realize how fortunate I am to have never had any supply issues.

I've breastfeed full time for 7 months now and have been using Micronor (Progestin-only) for the past 4 months, all great! ;) I was advised and prescribed this one from one of the best OB and Humanitarian/Natural birth doctor in town. She said NuvaRing (which I used for almost 3 years before pregnancy) was a 'no, no' for breastfeeding.

Well, I usually have tons of extra milk, like I said. I tried to pump her a bottle tonight and barely got 2 oz.!!!! I was officially freaked out and took it out!!!

Let's hope my supply gets back up quickly!

My friend's milk supply diminished and she used the Nuva Ring. Her doctor(navy doctor mind you) said it was ok with Bf. My gyn said that ot would definitely effectyour supply. The mini pill works great for me!

i am nursing and refuse to use birth control. with my first baby i got depo when she was 12 weeks old and i never had a good milk supply after than and ended up quit nursing at 6 months

I back up what the other ladies have said. I would refrain from using any birth control that has estrogen in it. I used the mini pill when I was nursing up until he weaned. I will not use anything but that this time around either.

My OB told me that progestin only birth control is what you can take and not sabotage your breastfeeding. Basically 3 options...Depo, mini pill, and IUD. The estrogen type hormones in combination birth controls is what affects your supply. Good luck!

I love the nuva ring but my doctor told me I shouldnt use it as long as I am breast feeding because it can really reduce your supply. Pretty much any birth control that has progesterone in it should be off limits. I would stop using it and tak to your doctor about switching it right away.
