My daughter is 2 months and a few days. We are doing really well nursing and at the moment we have no challenges in this area. I would however like to start pumping my breast milk, in case we would ever need it. Are there any reasons other then the one I have to pump? Should I pump and store as much as I can? Should I encourage her to start drinking from a bottle even if it is breast milk? Any tips for first time pumper (haha)? thanks ladies!

Hi Carissa! I have a 7 mo and I pump when I need too. I like to have at least 4 ounces in the freezer in case I ever have to be away from my daughter - I don't ever give her a bottle unless I'm away though. In fact I've never given her a bottle - because she only has one when I'm away. However - with my first daughter I waited until she was 4 months to give her her first bottle, and she never took to it. By this age they know the difference, and if it's never been introduced they might not take to it. Everything else aside - having a bottle pumped is great for taking a few hours to yourself. Leave your hubby with some BM in a bottle and go for a walk! :D I think pump when you like too - I find it most successful if I pump in the morning, and I nurse twice on the same side, and then pump from the other so I get a good few ounces at least! Good luck, happy pumping hehe!

Hi Carissa,

It's sounds like my daughter is right around the same age as yours and I just started to pump and freeze breast milk for her in case of an emergency....pretty much the same thinking that you are having. It was a bit hard at first but as I continue to pump it becomes easier every time. I also gave my daughter a bottle to try to get her use to it, but I had to try a few different nipples until I found one that she would actually take. I think you should start to try a bottle with her like once a week just so she can get use to it. It was not easy for her to take a bottle and she is still getting use to it and is fussy getting latched onto the bottle but once she gets the milk in her mouth she is ok. Hope that helps!
