My daughter is 4 weeks old and I was just curious how likely it is to become pregnant once you are sexually active again. I am not breastfeeding due to complications after surgery but I do pump every three hours. My daughter receives breastmilk all the time just from the bottle but should I worry about getting pregnant? How soon? We do want at least one more just not that soon.

I am have been nursing my son since the day be was born he is now 7 months old. I had my first period at 6 weeks. So it is possible to get pregnant at 6 weeks and possibly sooner. My Dr. told me that a couple of his patients came in for their 6 week check up and found out they were pregnant again. So it is possible. My mother in law had her first daughter and when she was 2 months old she found out she was pregnant again.

I know someone who got pregnant 6 weeks postpartum- it was the very first time they had sex after she gave birth! It was not the way they had planned it. You won't know you've ovulated until you get that first period. Better safe than sorry if you aren't ready for the next one yet. And just a side note, if you're pumping you are breastfeeding- at least in my book! Don't sell yourself short!

I would be careful and use protection if you don't want another one right away. I know a girl who had her first two kids in the same year, one in January and the second in December. Unless you get your period back you don't know when you are ovulating.

There is no way to know when you become fertile again. Once you have had a period you may have already ovulated but not known it until the period starts. I had a period after only 3 months of bf while others don't have one for 9 months or more. Periods may also be irregular while bf so it's sometimes really hard to know when you might ovulate or might not. Hope this helps!

everyone one is different so to be on the safe side I would use some kind of protection. I have heard around 5 months but I would put all my trust on that.
