My daughter was diagnosed with thrush for the last 3 weeks or so; her pediatrician is changing to a different medication as of today.... my nipples hurt a little (but able to breastfeed without major pain), however I don't want to be passing the infection back and forth. So, I've been primarily pumping and bottle feeding for the last couple of days. Has anyone else gone through a similar experience? any recommendations? I don't want my baby to take preference over the bottle..... she is almost 6 weeks old. Thanks!

My baby and I also went through thrush. The key is to be treated together. Treat your baby with the medication, but also treat yourself. There is a nystatin cream (prescription) which is the same drug for the thrush, just in a cream. If you are both being treated, you won't pass it back and forth and you will still be able to breastfeed. Hope that helps. Good luck!

My daughter and I both had thrush for what felt like months. The only thing that worked for us was gentian violet and all purpose nipple ointment compound (prescription). I've heard that the grapefruit seed extract can be good but it's very hard to get in smaller places. A lactation consultant will be your most valuable resource.

Sugerly there is no reason to give a bottle at this time and you are running a high risk that your baby will end up prefering the bottle and then it will be an uphill battle. Keep that baby at the breast 100% of the time.

To get rid of the thrush use gingian violet. It's available over the counter and is safe and effective. Apply to your nipples and babys mouth twice a day for four days. Skip a day and do it for another four days.

To avoid getting thrush latter on give yourself and your baby a probiotic. It's also available over the counter and what it does is maintain the good bacteria in your body that keeps the yeast from getting out of hand.

Remember to keep that baby at the breast. You don't want to end up giving formula because your baby stopped nursing and your supply deminished from just pumping. You are taking a great risk in using the bottle and it's 100% safe for you to be breastfeeding right now.

Here is a great article from Dr Jack Newman on treating thrush. It work for me on a very hard case of the yeasty beasties!

You need to treat yourself and the baby simultatinously or it will never go away.

If you have thrush it dosnt matter if you feed directly from the breast or the bottle as its the breastmilk that contains the thrush not just your nipples. So feel free to continue to nurse as you normally would. Have you thought about using these natural treatments?

Grapefruit Seed Extract, Gentian Violet, All purpose nipple ointment, Acidophilus, Nystatin these are all remedies that help treat thrush and usually have great outcomes.
